Llangefni could clinch third spot after two end of season fixtures scrapped – Pwllheli and Denbigh win

NORTH WALES WOMEN’S LEAGUE

Llangefni Town could finish third in just their second season in the North Wales Women’s Football League.

Dan Gregg and Liam Ewing’s side showed promise in their debut campaign, but this term Cefni have improved vastly.

Their total of 44 points could be enough to clinch third spot as NFA and Amlwch Town finished their seasons tonight on 43 and 41 respectively.

Both the latter clubs still have a fixture left to play, but the league has confirmed that NFA will not have to play their outstanding game at Pwllheli, nor will Northop Hall fulfill their fixture at Amlwch Town.

The outcome of third place now depends on what happens points-wise regarding the cancelled fixtures.

NEWFA general secretary Dave Fawkes said the only match left to be played this season is Llanfairfechan Town v Pwllheli this Sunday.

“The league will complete without two of the remaining fixtures taking place (Pwllheli v NFA and Amlwch Town v Northop Hall) as it doesn’t impact the table,” said Mr Fawkes.

NFA 1 PWLLHELI 2

Lois Thomas struck twice to earn league runners-up Pwllheli maximum points at NFA tonight.

Thomas scored on 48 and 73 minutes to take her goals total for the season to 24.

After a goalless first half, Thomas gave Pwllheli the lead three minutes after the break.

Zoe Stopford levelled for NFA on the hour with her 18th goal of 2022-23, but Thomas clinched the win 17 minutes from time.

DENBIGH TOWN 2 AMLWCH TOWN 1

A positive end to the season for sixth-place Denbigh Town.

Amber Hellon gave the hosts a 26th-minute lead and it stayed 1-0 until Ellie Sian Jones equalised for the Anglesey visitors with her 18th goal this term.

However, an unlikely source bagged the winner in the 88th minute – Denbigh substitute Sophie Bancroft, who had not scored previously this season with her few appearances coming as a goalkeeper.
