ERYRI CONSULTING NORTH WALES COAST WEST LEAGUE REPORTS – MARCH 17-18

PREMIER DIVISION

CPD Pwllheli 2 Bethesda Athletic 4

Joe Todd scored a beauty to put Bethesda on level terms

Leaders Bethesda made a big statement in the Premier Division title race on Saturday as they moved nine points clear after winning the battle of the top two at Recreation Road.

Hosts Pwllheli were undefeated in six league outings, having not been beaten since losing 5-2 at Bethesda in December.

As for Mark Hughes’ Pesda outfit, they had lost just one of their previous 17 league outings and with games running out they are in a very strong position.

Steffan Toplis provided Pwllheli with the perfect start when he put them ahead after just three minutes.

Bethesda have so many scoring outlets, though, and one of their best, Joe Todd, equalised on 24 minutes with a fierce free-kick.

Pwllheli’s hopes of victory took a big knock after 27 minutes when veteran Carl Jones received a straight red card.

And on the half-hour, Scott Hughes lashed in a beauty, volleying home a headed clearance and making it 2-1 to the Ogwen Valley side at half time.

Athletic took a major step towards the points a minute into the second half when a free kick was chipped into the box and Cian Williams reacted sharpest to score.

Pwll made substitutions in a bid to turn the tide and threw themselves a lifeline on 72 minutes when Sion Jones found the net – 2-3 and game on.

However, just four minutes later, the ball came into the Pwllheli box from the left and landed nicely for Scott Hughes to control and drill in number four. The celebrations said it all.

CPD Aberffraw 2 CPD Llanberis 6

Jamie Mcdaid (2), Callum Macdonald, Dion Owen, Kurt Hellfeld and Cian Pleming shared the goals as ever-dangerous Llanberis rose to second in the table.

Tomos Hughes and Ceilan Williams responded for Aberffraw.

Glantraeth 2 CPD Pentraeth 0

Paul Bryant and Darren Lewthwaite delivered the second half goals which clinched maximum points for Glantraeth.

CPD Nefyn United 1 Llanrug United 3

Osian Williams, David Noel Williams and Jonathan Sadler were all on the mark as Llanrug moved ever further away from the lower places at Nefyn’s expense.

The Penwaig, who had lost 6-4 at Llanrug in February, suffered a third straight league defeat. Ifan Gwilym Jones bagged their consolation on Saturday.

CPD Penrhyndeudraeth 2 CPD Llannerchymedd 3

A great result on the road lifted Llannerchymedd out of the bottom two.

Man of the match Zakariye Jama, Jordan Taylor (penalty) and Gavin Sharpe suppled Llan’s goals on seven, 45 and 54 minutes respectively.

All this after Penrhyn got off to a flyer, taking a two-goal lead inside six minutes via Deegan John and Reece Evans.

DIVISION ONE

Trearddur Bay 3 Bontnewydd 0

Asa Thomas was on the mark again – 45 goals this season, 627 career goals. Picture: SEAN CHADWICK – many thanks

Trearddur restored their eight-point lead at the summit with an impressive win at Lon Isallt on Saturday.

Asa Thomas scored twice to edge up to 45 goals in all competitions this season, while the in-form Kaine Bentley also found the net.

Bay boosted their unbeaten run in the league to 19 matches and have a short trip to Holyhead Town coming up this Saturday.

Thomas and Bentley tested Bont keeper Leon Owen early on, but the visitors thought they had taken the lead when striker Cai Edwards unleashed a 25-yard shot that cannoned off the underside of the bar into the net. However, the whistle had already sounded for offside.

The chance served as a warning to the home side and they responded well. The equaliser inevitably came through striker Thomas on 30 minutes.

A well-worked ball wide by Melvin Mcginness found Thomas one-on-one with a defender to beat. He turned inside and was brought down for a clear penalty.

Up he stepped and made absolutely no mistake with a cool finish into the bottom right-hand corner for his 32nd league goal of 2022-23.

The second half started with the home side immediately taking control.

Young Ynys Mon midfielder Sol Williams was particularly impressive in bossing the midfield with his ball retention and passing ability.

It was not long before that dominance paid dividends when Thomas turned provider to strike partner Bentley. A low ball across the box was turned home by the 19-year-old to make it 6 goals in his last 4 games.

Bont battled back and forced a couple of first-class saves from veteran goalkeeper Paul Prtichard.

The points were wrapped up on 70 minutes when Thomas added his second. A cleared corner was whipped back in by assist ace Mike Edwards into a dangerous area and it was Thomas’ impressive half-volleyed effort that beat the young Bont stopper at the back post.

Bentley was brought off late on to rest ahead for his return to face former side Holyhead Town next week and replaced by 16 year-old Lennon Owen, another example of the club’s youth development.

Bethesda Rovers 2 Llangoed and District 1

A good contest saw all three goals arrive in the first half.

An own goal on seven minutes from Nathaniel Evans put Rovers one-up.

Aled Jones equalised three minutes later, but Kieron Bullock knocked in what turned out to be the decider after 31.

Llanfairpwll 2 Caergybi 0

A 42nd minute penalty from Morgan Rowlands and Danny Connolly’s decisive strike on 84 secured a welcome win for Llanfairpwll.

Llanystumdwy 1 Arriva 0

Gruffudd Sion provided the key moment in this tight encounter when he notched the 82nd minute winner at Parc Dwyfor.

CPD Mountain Rangers 3 CPD Cefni 1

Aled Steele (2) and Stuart Cooke split the goals to give Rangers a match-winning 3-0 lead before Nathan Lewis replied with an 89th minute consolation for Cefni.

Cemaes Bay 5 Gaerwen 0 (Friday)

Tom Wood got the fire started for Cemaes with two first-half goals on Friday night.

Ryan Folksman, Cian Owen and Gary Owen added singles for the hosts in the second period, while the closing stages saw Gaerwen’s Cian Griffiths-Jones and Alan Mark Owen both dismissed for second yellow cards.
