Dynamic duo Ellie Coulson and Jen Cox were on the mark again as Llangefni emerged victorious against a Caernarfon side which continues to show constant improvement.
Dan Gregg’s side made the short trip over the bridge to Nantporth on Wednesday night to face the Cofis in a rearranged league match
The game took a while to get going with both teams struggling to assert any dominance over the other but there were plenty of big challenges and full throttle tackles for the record crowd of over 100 spectators at Nantporth for a ladies game (according to the Nantporth groundsman). This is something that Caernarfon and Llangefni can be proud of.
They were finally treated to a fantastic goal on the 43rd minute when Ffion Thomas got the crowd going with some great skill on the right hand side, passed to Catrin George who played the ball to Hannah Owen in the Caernarfon box and she laid off perfectly for Coulson to hit home and send Llangefni up 1-0 just before half time.
Vice-captain Llinos Hughes came off injured at half time but Llangefni’s strength in depth meant that Mared Roberts could come straight on and deputise.
Llangefni started the second half much better with Cox beginning to cause the Caernarfon back four some major headaches.
In the 59th minute, the experienced keeper Jess Marshall showed just how much her kicking game has improved, sending a huge kick bouncing over the Caernarfon defence for Cox to turn on the afterburners and race through the give Cefni a two-goal lead.
That’s 14 for Cox this season and nine for Coulson – 23 goals as a partnership.
The spirited Caernarfon side led by captain Sara Williams never gave up though and started to threaten in behind with the pacey Lisa Jones.
Llangefni tried to settle down things down with Frankie Davies on to steady the ship and new signing Abigail Jones to bring fresh legs, but unfortunately then lost Marissa George to injury which left them with 10 players to see the game out.
Manager Gregg said: “Brilliant heart and desire from Caernarfon tonight! The improvement made is incredible and they will 100% start taking points off teams soon.
“I’m glad we’ve played both fixtures against them now so it won’t be us that lose them points.
“As for my own team, I’m so proud of them tonight. We showed that we can win games when not at our best. It’s been an intense few weeks for them: Tuesday training, Felinheli Wednesday, Flint Sunday, training Tuesday, Caernarfon Wednesday and finishing with a derby on Sunday v Amlwch.
“They hate cancelling training even with a match the next day which shows the desire from each one of them. We need to rest up now and dig a performance out in the derby on Sunday. We’d love 9 points from 9.”
