Welsh Colleges Women’s squad finalised – four North Wales players included

The 20-player Welsh Colleges Women’s Football Squad for the forthcoming international tournament in Rome has been finalised.

Three students from North East Wales college Coleg Cambria Sienna Strapp, Seren Cashen and Lily Whitefoot – have been selected, as well as Madison Williams, who plays for Ardal North champions Llandudno and studies at Cardiff-based Coleg y Cymoedd.

Sports and PE lecturer at Coleg Cambria, Sean Regan, will coach and manage the squad.

For this year’s Welsh trials, Cambria, a multi-campus set-up operating in Deeside, Wrexham, Llysfasi and Northop, was the only North Wales college to have players chosen.

Following a training camp and fixture against AoC Colleges of England, which finished 2-2, Sienna, Seren, Lily and Madison were selected.

Sienna, who plays for Connah’s Quay Nomads, studies at Deeside, while Seren and Lily attend the Wrexham sites and represent The New Saints. Madison (known as Maddie) is a full Wales Under-17 international.

All four will compete in an international tournament in Rome in February/March and Welsh Colleges hope to arrange a few other fixtures after that.

Aged 17, she made her senior debut for The New Saints against Cardiff Met on November 21, 2021 and provided two assists.

An ardent Wrexham AFC fan, she has since split her appearances between the under-19 and full teams and is making fine progress.

Seren, a 16-year-old forward from Penyffordd, plays her club football for The New Saints’ under 19’s squad.

She has also featured on the bench for the first team, who compete in the top level Adran Premier.

Sienna Strapp

Sienna first made her mark through the age groups for Northop Hall before being signed by Connah’s Quay Nomads in November 2021.

The 17-year-old has been outstanding for Nomads Under-19’s, who she captains, and also in her regular appearances for the first team.

Sienna was in the Nomads side which won the NEWFA Women’s Challenge Cup last season and this term is flying high in Genero Adran North.

Maddie Williams

Madison, 17, last season represented Wales Under-17’s, where she came up against Sweden, Scotland, England and Italy. She featured in a Euro qualifier in Sweden.

In club grassroots football, Maddie has turned out for Penrhyn Bay Girls, Conwy County, North Wales regional teams, Llandudno Swifts and Llandudno Academy Boys before Llandudno Ladies.

A centre-back or full-back, she was a standout player for Llandudno Ladies in their 2021-22 Adran North title-winning campaign.
