Rhyl Rangers 3 Rhyl Celtics 2
Y Clwb 1 Conwy Comrades 8
Ryan Neal’s Comrades continued their goal-packed start to the season with a massive win at local rivals Y Clwb.
Following a week of no game, the Conwy side were itching to get going again with a difficult trip to Glan Conwy ahead of them.
Due to heavy rain over the previous two days, the pitch was heavy, but credit to the groundskeepers they managed to get the game on.
Conwy started the livelier of the two sides with chances early on. Eventually the persistence paid off when a lovely ball in from Joe Carey found Azz Rogers at the back stick to head home for 1-0.
It was 2-0 shortly after when again some brilliant link up play on the left-hand side saw a ball fizzed in and Joe Jones and Joe Carey both queuing up. It was Carey who got the final touch.
Ten minutes later Carey was clumsily brought down in the box and converted the resultant penalty himself.
Just before half time Jamie Haggas took on a couple of players and drilled low and hard at the keeper’s near post to make it 4-0.
At the start of the second half, Y Clwb came out with a lot of energy and passion, much improved on the first 45, and created a few chances.
In response, Tom Paddock and Harry Roberts were brought into the fray for Comrades, The impact was almost immediate when Paddock hit a double to make it 6-0.
With tired legs showing Comrades made a defensive change to bring on the Conwy version of Rafael and Fabio in the Kearneys, whose vigour up and down the wings caused Y Clwb problems.
Seven-nil wasn’t far away with these fresh legs when Dan Williams finished a well-worked goal into the bottom corner, well-deserved for his great work throughout the game.
Clwb were going to give up and pulled one back after some poor defending from Comrades.
With minutes left the on-bombing left back Scott Kearney was on hand to finish from again a well-crafted bit of play through the middle.
From various comments and spectator opinions today’s football was a joy to watch and some great goals. Credit to Clwb for not giving up and giving 110% throughout.
Comrades look to continue the good league form with a game against Royal Oak next Sunday.
It was a close fought derby between two well-matched sides which saw Rangers come out on top.
Josh Blench, James Kightley and Shaun Edwards provided the goals for the winners, while replies from Kyle Lally and Richard Hill made sure Celtics went close.
It was great to see these two teams up against each other at The Rezzo as without them there would not have been a league this season.
The combined group of players were all part of one squad last season, but split into two sides this term to create that essential extra team for the league.
As it happened, Millbank folded after one game to leave the league with seven teams, but the competition has continued.
