Report – Caernarfon Town beaten but far from disgraced against league leaders Denbigh

MATCH REPORT – NORTH WALES WOMEN’S FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Caernarfon Town 1 (S Williams 90+3)
Denbigh Town 6 (E Morris 24, L Morris 36, L Roberts 38 & 40, C Morris 59, Hellon 67)
Despite the result Caernarfon coach Owain Jones was very encouraged by the performance of his developing side against North Wales League leaders Denbigh.
A highly competitive game at Llanrug was full of chances for both sides.
The match seemed a lot closer than the final score suggests and the crowd were unlucky not to be treated to more goals, largely due to heroic defending and excellent keeping from both teams.
Caernarfon started well and played some nice through balls to striker Lisa Jones who was unlucky not to put her team ahead, with the visitors thankful to the excellent positioning of keeper Katie Spruce to deny her.
With play going back and forth for the first 20 or so minutes Denbigh went ahead soon after due to a mix up in play which resulted in Emily Morris finding the net from the following corner.
With the game still in the balance the next 20 minutes saw Caernarfon losing Jasmin Hughes and Cara Jones to injury.
Denbigh capitalised on the changes, scoring three quickfire goals in five minutes to end the half with a 4-0 lead.
Lucy Morris scored the second followed by a rapid brace from Lois Roberts.
The second half started brightly with both sides going for it from the off with competitive challenges and good goalkeeping continuing.
The game kept on an even keel before Charlotte Morris found the net with a delicate lobbed effort to put Denbigh further ahead.
With play going back and forth Denbigh had the rub of the green on the 67th minute when after a good save from Gwenllian Rennie, Amber Hellon was there to make it 6-0.
Caernarfon still pushed hard for a deserved goal which they got late on from a wonderful 25 yard free kick by captain Sara Williams, who found the top right-hand corner and proceeded to celebrate with delighted team-mates.
All in all a game well worth watching for the neutral with both teams competitive till the end.
Caernarfon coach Jones said: “Extremely proud of each one of the players today and I am absolutely delighted we got a goal to show for our efforts.
“On another day we could have had more but it was not to be.
“Today was another indication for me that we are heading in the right direction and although we didn’t get the result we wanted, the team played good football and showed a togetherness that bodes well for the future.”
