Welsh Cup round one reports – Glannau heroes lose on penalties, 1876 beaten in 11-goal epic

FAW Welsh Cup round one reports
Y Felinheli 1 Y Glannau 1
(Y Felinheli won 4-2 on pens)
Tier 5 underdogs Y Glannau produced arguably their finest ever performance as they pushed third-tier favourites Y Felinheli all the way to penalties in Saturday’s Welsh Cup epic at Cae Seilo.
In the end, the North Wales Coast East Division One outfit ended up the losing side, but they certainly did their league extremely proud.
Y Felinheli made the better start and twice in the opening 20 minutes, Y Glannau were indebted to Michael Bellis for goal-line clearances.
This was a prime example of the excellent defending displayed by the visitors all through the tie.
However, the Ardal North West hosts did edge ahead on 26 minutes when a great move saw Ryan Cain cross low for his brother Jack Cain to finish from close range.
Osian Williams lashed just over the bar for the away side, but come the interval it remained 1-0.
Y Glannau management had made a few amendments after conceding and once these took effect the visitors began to produce better football.
Early in the second half, Harrison Bellis and Chris McQuillen both dragged efforts just off target.
Then in the 52nd minute, Y Glannau won a penalty. Aaron Dodwell’s through ball hit a home team hand in the box and Harrison Bellis smashed in the equaliser from the spot.

The game was now very open and both teams were creating chances but neither could win it in the 90 minutes.
So it went down to spot-kicks and Y Felinheli triumphed 4-2, Guto Hughes producing a vital save for the hosts before Dylan Jones put away the decisive kick.
St Asaph stars Y Glannau could only feel proud at their heroic efforts, though.
Manager Danny Parsons said: “So proud to push a tier 3 team all the way but it just wasn’t to be. What a squad we have – the togetherness is brilliant.”
Y Felinheli: Guto Hughes, Ifan Jones, Ryan Cain, Adam Hughes, Jack Cain, Dylan Jones, Iwan Owen, Gruff John, Gavin Lloyd-Jones, Iwan Edwards (Moi Hallam 28), Osian Pritchard.
Y Glannau: Bradley Wright, Osian Williams, Michael Bellis, Jordan Davies-Jones, Kyle Hedge, Tawse Cox (Tomos Williams 74 – Travis Williams 79), Chris McQuillen, Alec Williams, Harrison Bellis, Joey Fontana, Aaron Dodwell.
Bow Street 6 Bangor 1876 5

This all-Tier 3 stormer at Cae Piod saw 1876 stunningly recover from 3-0 and 5-3 down to be level, only to lose out to an injury-time clincher from the hosts.
Rhydian Davies put Bow one-up after three minutes from a penalty awarded for handball.
On 18 minutes the lead was doubled when Ben Davies knocked the ball past Huw Shaw from 10 yards out.
The visitors were staring right down the barrel when after 27, Dafydd Carruthers got on the end of a long kick from keeper Ben Willis, rounded Shaw, and scored from a tight angle.
Corrig McGonigle pulled 1876 back into the game when he got his head to a shot by Cameron Barry.
Visiting manager Michael Johnston was shown a red card before Bangor’s problems worsened after Rhydian Davies converted a controversial penalty for 4-1.
However, soon after McGonigle hooked the ball in to give the visiting fans hope – 4-2 half time.
Early in the second half, the Ardal North West travellers were right back in contention when Tom Clarke headed in a cross from Kian Owen.
The hosts restored their two-goal advantage just before the hour when Tomos Roberts netted from close in after Shaw parried a free-kick.
However, Bangor hit back on 76 when Gethin Thomas beat the keeper after Clarke flicked on a long throw from substitute Shaun Lock.
Barry side-footed in and it looked like 5-5, but the referee disallowed the goal after an assistant intervened – apparently there had been a push during the build-up.
Undeterred, 1876 continued to battle and did get back on terms after McGonigle completed his hat-trick via a penalty.
Despite a monumental effort to get level, there was unfortunately to be a sting in the tail as Bow Street’s Ben Davies delivered a winner deep into injury time with a glancing header.
Abermule 2 Hawarden Rangers 2
(Hawarden won 5-4 on pens)

Hawarden fought back from 2-0 down to win a dramatic tie in Powys.
Luke Cornish netted for Abermule on 42 and 64 minutes, but Paul Lindfield and James Ratcliffe’s equaliser after 87 forced spot kicks and the Ardal North West visitors prevailed.
Conwy Borough 3 Kinmel Bay 2 (Friday)
Tier 4 underdogs Kinmel Bay gave Cymru North hosts Conwy a real scare before bowing out with honour.
Tate Walker’s goal handed Kinmel a half-time lead, Conor Whelan levelled early in the second period, but the visitors edged in front again through Anthony Jones after 78.
Sean McCaffery made it all-square on 81 and after Cory Williams missed a penalty, Cian Evans knocked in a 96th minute decider for the Tangerines.
Llandudno Amateurs 1 Llanrug United 7 (Friday)
No chance of the Amateurs repeating their shock win over Bodedern in the last round as Llanrug United ran away with it at Maesdu Park.
The tier 4 visitors rattled up seven through Kevin Lloyd (2), Jonathan Sadler, Sion Phillips, Morgan Williams, Iwan Bohana and Osian Williams, Azz Rogers with the home team’s sole reply.
Llanfair United 1 Llanuwchllyn 2
A great win for the visitors with Sam Evans and Dan Roberts on target, Nyasha Mwamuka for the hosts.
Llangefni Town 1 Llandudno Albion 2
Dean Seager and Adam Hold (penalty) notched the goals which put the Albion through at the expense of Cefni, who responded via Gerwyn Roberts.
Llanidloes Town 0 Gresford Athletic 1
Chris Hibbert’s 32nd minute strike was enough to ensure Cymru North visitors Gresford progressed at Victoria Park.
Llansannan 1 Glantraeth 2
Darren Lewthwaite’s 78th minute winner put Glantraeth into round two.
After a goal-less first half the teams exchanged penalties, Leon Gierke converting for Llansannan, Dylan Williams for the Anglesey visitors.
Llay Welfare 3 Flint Mountain 6
A superb Corey Smart hat-trick, Kyle Smyth brace (one pen) and Sam Molyneux opener saw Mountain to a deserved win at The Ring in an all-tier 3 tussle.
Lewis Bickerton-Cole, Jared Taylor and Matty Worrall came up with Llay’s replies.
Machynlleth 0 Prestatyn Town 3
Liam Van Gelder and Tom Hilditch (2) made sure Prestatyn advanced comfortably as expected at tier 4 Machynlleth.
Mochdre Sports 0 Chirk AAA 3
The Colliers swept into round two with a straightforward win at North Wales Coast East Premier side Mochdre Sports.
The Cymru North favourites swept into a 15th minute lead when Jack Orbell set up Louie Middlehurst, who finished well.
Chirk were reminded the home side were no pushovers as they hit the post on one of their attacks.
Although dominating, the AAA’s did occasionally look nervous at the back and presented Mochdre with a couple of chances before Dale Davies settled the nerves with a goal just before half time.
Davies scored again just after the restart and although Chirk continued to control the tie, they failed to create many more chances.
Penparcau 1 CPD Y Rhyl 1879 3
Despite an early red card for midfielder Jordan Worthington, 1879 went on to win at Min-y-Ddol.
Penparcau coach, Welsh football’s very own Tomi Morgan, also had an afternoon to forget as he was red-carded on 25 minutes and ordered from the bench.
Alex Jones put Rhyl ahead from a 32nd minute penalty, but Matthew Davies levelled on 39.
Two goals in four minutes just before the hour sealed victory for 1879.
Andy Gittins found his own net, then Kieran Ellis added a third for the 10 men.
Porthmadog 3 Mold Alexandra 4
Rhys Nash was a hat-trick hero for a Mold side which recovered from 3-1 down to take the spoils at Y Traeth.
Goals from Alex Boss (2) and Callum Parry put Port in control nine minutes into the second half, Nash responding for the Cymru North travellers.
However, Alex displayed the better staying power, Nash and Matty Lewis making it three-apiece midway through the half.
And that man Nash sealed it in the 80th minute with a far post header.
Talysarn Celts 0 FC Queen’s Park 1
A brilliant tie at Gloddfa Glai, where Talysarn did the North Wales Coast West Premier truly proud with a tremendous effort against the experienced cup campaigners of Queen’s Park.
The game was settled by a third-minute Curtis Neary strike, after which it was blood-and-thunder 50-50 stuff, with Celts producing a big finish but not quite able to break down an heroic Park defence.
Trearddur Bay 1 Penycae 5
Trearddur have the makings of a very good tier 5 side this season, but they found third-tier Penycae just too strong on the day.
Ben Duffy (2), Drew Wickens, Ben Buley and Josh Mazzarella provided the away goals, master marksman Asa Thomas having brought the hosts level early in the second half with his 15th of the season.
