A heroic, defiant effort by a severely depleted CPD Unedig Nefyn side ended in ultimate heartbreak at Cae Marian on Saturday, as two stoppage-time goals handed CPD Dolgellau AA a dramatic late victory in the Welsh Cup qualifying round.
Nefyn traveled to Dolgellau facing an uphill battle before a ball was even kicked, with 13 first-team squad members unavailable.
Despite the paper-thin depth, the Penwaig showed the heart of champions, refusing to hide and taking the game directly to the hosts.
The ruthless instinct of Tomi Jones-Evans came to the fore in the first half. Capitalizing on defensive mistakes in the Dolgellau ranks, Jones-Evans struck twice in eight minutes – 32nd pouncing on a slip in the hosts backline to slot home the opener and the 40th punishing another defensive error to double Nefyn’s advantage.
Disaster struck minutes into the second half when Nefyn were forced into an unexpected substitution, losing another experienced figure to injury.
Dolgellau seized on the momentary reshuffle immediately, with Gerwyn Williams pulling a goal back just seconds after the change.
Aaron Young fed a through ball and Williams rounded the advancing keeper before finding the net.
Despite the setback, Nefyn dug deep. The makeshift lineup threw their bodies on the line, restricting the hosts to precious few clear-cut chances as the clock ticked toward the 90-minute mark.
Just as a gutsy victory seemed on the cards, Dolgellau were awarded a soft free-kick deep into injury time. From the resulting delivery, Osian Morris headed in a lob into the six-yard box from close range.
The final cruel blow arrived in the 94th minute, as Tomos Jones lashed in a cross from the left at the back post for a dramatic winner to spare the hosts’ blushes and end Nefyn’s cup run in the most bitter circumstances imaginable.
