North Wales Coast Reserves League – Phoenix hit six in quarry derby, wins for Saints and Pwllheli

North Wales Coast Reserve League reports Sep 2-4
Penmaenmawr Phoenix Reserves 6 (Joe Williams 3, 1 pen, Gavin Simpson, Darren Evans, Morgan Roberts)
Llanfairfechan Town Reserves 1 (Cai Jones pen)
Champions Phoenix started the 2022-23 season with a bang as they registered a thumping victory in this local derby.
There was a great turnout from both villages in what was an eagerly anticipated clash at Cae Sling.
This is the first time in many years that both quarry village teams find themselves in the same league.
The game started at a frantic pace, but it was Penmaenmawr who settled quicker and began to play some decent football.
After a miss-placed back pass in the 11th minute, Phoenix striker Joe Williams was alert to pounce and calmly finish into an empty net.
Williams was then gifted a second after some great work from Lewis Roberts down the left, who crossed for a tap-in at the back post in the 23rd minute.
The lively Williams was really in the mood and in the 26th minute he made a powerful run into the box to be brought down for a penalty. Up he stepped and smashed the ball into the roof of the net to bag himself a hat-trick.
Llanfairfechan regrouped and defended well until the interval.
Five subs were introduced at the break by Penmaenmawr but this did not seem to upset the flow of the game.
Phoenix continued to dominate and skipper and player of the match Gavin Simpson made it 4-0 with a tidy finish in the 56th minute.
Morgan Roberts added a fifth in the 65th minute when he spotted the keeper off his line and finished from 25 yards.
After four years out with a knee ligament injury and now back playing, Darren Evans rounded off the scoring for Pen in the 68th minute after a clever run into the box and good finish into the bottom corner, giving the keeper no chance.
In the 72nd minute Llanfairfechan were awarded a penalty which resulted in home keeper Jonathan Sweetser-Hawkes being shown a red card.
Cai Jones finished straight down the middle to make it 6-1.
