FAW Amateur Trophy round one – north section reports

(reports on all ties except the Friday night Bethesda Athletic v Mynydd Llandegai game, as well as the ‘upsets’ section we featured on Saturday evening)

Match of the Day

Rhuddlan Town 0 Llanrwst United 0
(Rhuddlan won 6-5 on penalties)

One of Rhuddlan’s finest results for many a year saw them knock higher-level Llanrwst out of the FAW Trophy.
Already on a great run in the tier 4 North Wales Coast East Premier Division, John “Barney” Barnes’ side carried their fine form into knockout competition by eliminating opponents from T3 Ardal North West.
Manager Barnes made two changes from the Llandudno Junction win earlier in the week, with Ethan Taylor and Jordan Bellham unavailable so Rob Arnold and Daniel Johnston came into the squad to replace them.

Rhuddlan set up really solidly, keeping both wing-backs deep and not pushing up the pitch.
A tight first half saw the hosts create the better chances, but no goals.
Second half was more of the same, Town’s David Sharkey missing a fantastic opportunity to win the game within the 90.
Town had a late penalty shout rejected.
So spot-kicks were needed and Sharkey, Rob Arnold, Matty Rees, Elliot Turner, Ben Jacobson and Ashley Dale all converted, while Andrew Symonds produced the save to take Rhuddlan into the next round.

Bangor 1876 4 Glantraeth 1

Corrig McGonigle’s 10th hat-trick in a Bangor 1876 shirt guided his team into the next round of the Trophy.
The Anglesey-based hitman boosted his record for the fan-owned club to 53 goals in just 22 matches across all competitions.
He has moved up to 19 from eight games for the current season, this latest treble coming at the expense of one of his former clubs.

McGonigle is only the third 1876 player to pass 50 goals, the other two being Les Davies (62) and Jamie Petrie (60).
A McGonigle first-half treble and a Paul Bryant own goal made up 1876’s tally against Glantraeth, who replied late on through Gethin Davies.

Blaenau Amateurs 1 Nantlle Vale 4

Ashley Owen, Alwyn Roberts, Jamie Thomas and Daniel Bell grabbed the goals which secured Nantlle victory at Cae Clyd, Joe Dukes-Morgan replying with a late penalty.

Bodedern Athletic 1 CPD Y Rhyl 1879 3

Rhyl 1879’s perfect record this season extended to seven straight wins, Kieran Ellis (2) and Warren Adam on target at Cae Ty Cristion, Casey Boylan’s penalty providing Bodedern’s only response.

Bontnewydd 4 CPD Gaerwen 2

Luke Phillips (pen), Sion Jones (2) and Meilir Rowlands shared the home goals, Gaerwen’s scorers being Geraint Siddall and Alan Mark Owen (pen).
Gaerwen’s Aled Jones and Owen were both sent off in the latter stages for second yellow cards.

Bow 1 Abergele 2

A tightly-contested affair between these two tier 5 rivals at Prestatyn.
Gele started slowly but grew into the game, early chances falling to Gethin Jones and Dom Holland.
In the 31st minute, clever link-up play from Jones and Holland on the edge of the Bow area saw Sam Ashton through to slot the ball past the oncoming keeper for his second goal in as many games.
The start of the second half saw Bow soon level, a well-hit strike from the edge of the area by Kyle McLeod beyond the reach of Gele’s Tobo Brogden.
Gele pressed for a winner. James Lloyd was denied by a fine save and Ashton rattled the crossbar from distance.
In the 79th minute the visitors were rewarded for their efforts when Ashton found space in the box to set up Holland, who put away the decider for the men in red and black.

Brickfield Rangers 3 Coedpoeth United 1

Goals from Andy Vale, Aiden Fox and Jay Richardson clinched the honours for Brickfield, Adam Lloyd on the mark for Coedy.

Caerwys 1 Castell Alun Colts 6

Rob Ward’s hat-trick put the icing on this big away win for the Colts, Graham Dessington, David MacIntyre and Dan Woosey adding one apiece, Jack Smallman with a consolation for Caerwys.

Corwen 2 Rhos Aelwyd 3

Delwyn Jones’ great team goal had Corwen 1-0 up at half time, but Rhos fought back to win the tie after the break.
A Dan Roberts double – the second a screamer – and Sam Baldam strike gave the Aelwyd a 3-1 lead before Jones hit back for the hosts late on.

CPD Bro Cernyw 0 Prestatyn Sports 2

After a goalless first half, Sports turned the screw following the break, goals from Ian Griffiths and the in-form Antonio Jacovelli bringing them victory.
In the first half, Lee Beattie hit the post for the visitors, while keeper Sion Williams saved the day with a crunching tackle when much-improved Bro threatened.

CPD Llannefydd 1 Llanrug United 0

Robin Hughes scored the decider in this battle between tier 4 North Wales Coast East and West Premier sides.

CPD Mountain Rangers 1 Penmaenmawr Phoenix 3

Dan Williams, Mezz Knight and Harry Roberts bagged a goal apiece to send Phoenix into the next stage.
Rangers put up a good show against higher standard opposition, Dylan Owen with their goal.

CPD Pwllheli 2 Menai Bridge Tigers 1

Connor Livingstone grabbed a 75th minute winner as Pwllheli triumphed in Saturday’s all-tier 4 Trophy tussle at Y Rec.
Tigers came close when Callum Thomas headed over and broke the deadlock just before half time when Craig Roberts’ long ball over the top of the defence found Callum Davidson who lifted it over the home keeper into the empty net.
Pwllheli equalised shortly after, Lukas Baltovic first to a clearance with a low drive into the bottom corner.
The home side took the lead when a header back to keeper was intercepted by Livingstone, who applied the finish.

Flint Mountain 7 St Asaph City 1

A hat-trick from Kyle Smyth (1 pen), Sam Molyneux’s brace, plus strikes from Calyn Spencer and Ben Brierly saw Mountain to a crunching victory, Callum Murphy with a late consolation for Saints.

Greenfield 0 Denbigh Town 3

First-half goals from Nathan Brown and Sion Jones gave Denbigh a comfortable interval lead, then a 72nd minute Jacob Walker finish put the issue beyond doubt.

Holywell United 0 Llandyrnog United 4

Joel Rowlands (2), Jamie Jones and Osian Audley combined to secure Llandyrnog passage into round two.
The evergreen 55-year-old veteran Derry Morris also went close with an overhead kick.
Holywell were youthful hosts with great spirit.

Kinmel Bay 2 CPD Llanberis 3

Marcus Orlik notched a double to help the Darans take the spoils at Y Morfa Leisure Centre ground.
Ryan Owen added a single for the visitors, Connor Morris and Callum Foster hitting back for the Bay. Great contest.

Llandudno Albion 2 Amlwch Town 2 (Albion won 4-1 on pens)

It was quite a struggle for tier 3 Albion to see off underdogs Amlwch from tier 4.
Eventually, the favourites, who it must be said were without several regulars, got through on penalties.
Ryan Vaughan and Jack Atherton netted for the hosts in normal time, Dan Howes and Dan Jones hitting back for the Anglesey visitors.

Llandudno Junction 1 CPD Y Felinheli 2

Gavin Lloyd Jones and Aled Griffiths got the goals which did the trick for Felinheli, Jack Williams’ reply not enough to save Junction from defeat.

Llanfairfechan Town 0 Llangefni Town 5

A Cai Powell-Roberts hat-trick and Josh Stanley pair made it a comfortable success on the road for tier 3 outfit Llangefni, the only Anglesey team ever to lift the FAW Trophy.

Llangollen Town 1 Llay Welfare 7

Jon Collo and Tom Wells both scored twice in a thumping win for the visitors.
Jack Edwards, Kian Turton and an own goal made up the rest, Ben Wilson with the sole home response. Welfare led 6-0 at half time.

Llanuwchllyn 3 Hawarden Rangers 2

Hat-trick hero Mike Pritchard headed in a dramatic late winner for Llanuwchllyn.
Pritchard had earlier netted on 21 and 38 minutes, only for Tom Gunson and Joshua Robertson to bring Hawarden level with 74 on the clock.
Four minutes into added time, Pritchard delivered the decider.

Llanystumdwy 1 CPD Y Fali 1 (Llanystumdwy won 3-1 on pens)

Guto Roberts handed Llan a 46th minute lead, but Cai Miller levelled on 64 and despite Y Fali having Daniel Owen red-carded after 71, the tie ended up going to penalties.
Elgan Roberts of Llanystumdwy ended up the hero, saving two kicks in the shoot-out as the hosts went through 3-1.

Meliden 0 Talysarn Celts 0 (Meliden won 4-2 on pens)

Talysarn keeper Brian Page saved a penalty in the match itself and produced a number of other fine stops, but in the end it was spot-kicks which did for the visitors.
After a 0-0 draw in which Meliden went close numerous times, the hosts prevailed 4-2 on pens.

Mochdre Sports 3 CPD Y Glannau 3 (Sports won 5-4 on pens)

Goalkeeper Nic Bould was the Sports hero as he produced the crucial shoot-out penalty save that sent the hosts through.
The tier 4 home side were given a great battle by the tier 5 visitors though.
Finlay Jones dekivered Mochdre a 17th minute lead, but Harrison Bellis equalised and Chris McQuillen edged Y Glannau in front before the break.
Jordan Phillips made it 2-2 from the penalty spot just before the hour, and two minutes later Alex Williams gave Sports the lead.
Bellis levelled it with a penalty of his own and it now came down to a spot-kicks contest which Sports edged thanks to Bould.

Mynydd Isa Spartans 2 CPD Caer Clwyd 1

George Davies and Shay Davies put Spartans two-up and it was not until the 91st minute that Craig Lavery was able to pull one back for the travellers.

Rhyl All Stars 2 Holyhead Town 3

Twelve months ago, Holyhead Town had been caned 5-1 at Rhyl All Stars in the NWCFA Junior Challenge Cup.
A year on and what a turnaround – the Harbourmen edging the victory in a close-fought Trophy encounter.
Tony Meyer scored twice and Chris Hughes notched the other for the islanders, Joseph Smith (pen) and Warren Anthony replying.

Ruabon Rovers 11 Johnstown YFC 0

Conner Kendrick (4) and Andrew Swarbrick (2) shared six goals between them as Ruabon Rovers ran up double figures in the Trophy.

Brynley Thomas, Daniel Kebell, James Jones (pen) and Richard Griffiths (pen), plus a Brett Monk own goal made up the rest.

Saltney Town 19 FC United of Wrexham 0

There was a strong hint of potential one-sidedness to come after a tier 3 side of renowned cup fighters were drawn at home to tier 5 football novices.
Sam Henry (7), Tom Rowlands (4), Jack Roberts (3), Sam Reynolds (3) and Stephen Chiocchi (2) split the 19 Saltney goals between them.
