Women’s football – Pwllheli do north proud in Swansea, five for Llanystumdwy

Once more Pwllheli did North Wales football so proud as they made Adran Premier leaders and red-hot favourites Swansea City battle hard for victory at Llandarcy.

Only two goals, four second-half minutes apart, separated the sides in this FAW Welsh Women’s Cup quarter-final.

Having to travel such a long distance, the mid-table tier 2 Adran North side, who were without key players Katie Bowe and Hayley Rees-Williams, produced a tremendous defensive display with goalkeeper Elena Julio outstanding.

Pwllheli had given Adran Premier outfit Cardiff City FC Women a great contest in the Adran Trophy recently before losing 3-0, so Swansea could not afford to take their opponents lightly.

The Swans’ after-match report sadly gave little credit to Pwllheli’s fine effort and instead focused on their ‘dominant performance’ (and so they should dominate given the gap between the teams).

The first half saw the hosts strike the woodwork four times, while Julio produced fine stops from Chloe Chivers and Stacey John-Davis.

The interval arrived goalless, a shock scoreline considering what some were predicting beforehand.

However, the deadlock was broken when Chivers’ strike on 53 minutes went in off the post and after 57, Hosford finished off a John-Davis assist.

Julio would not be beaten again, pulling off a double save to deny Karmyn Carter and then Hosford.

Lowri Hughes threatened on the counter for Pwllheli, but Chloe Tiley thwarted her with a last-ditch challenge.

Genero Adran North hosts Bethel did well to keep Cardiff Met down to a one-goal lead in the first half.

And the students only led 2-0 until the 70th minute before three rapid goals killed the tie.

Bethel did not get the best of luck with decisions. Ffion Williams was through on goal and was denied by a good stop from keeper Charlotte Smith, who then barged over the home striker as she went for the loose ball.
Clear penalty, right in front of the referee, but nothing doing.

NORTH EAST WALES FA WOMEN’S CUP

Llanfair United 3 (Annalee Hudson-Owen 26, Gemma Jones 32, Nia Ellis 39)

In-form Llanfair advanced to the next stage of the NEWFA Cup in a tie where all the goals came in the first half.

Annalee Hudson-Owen and Gemma Jones put the Powys team two-up before Amy Glendinning replied.

However, Nia Ellis gave United daylight by making it 3-1 before the interval.

Welshpool Town 7 (Joanne Bliss-Bennett 19, Lauren Richards 30, Sophie Edwards 31, Bethan Jones 35 & 75, Amy Aldwinckle 41, Jasmine Adams 52)

Welshpool’s cracking start to 2022 continued with a third win in four games.

While Holywell under-performed, the visitors still needed to get the goals and this they did with the excellent Bethan Jones providing two of them.

Joanne Bliss-Bennett, Lauren Richards, Sophie Edwards, Amy Aldwinckle and Jasmine Adams added singles for ‘Pool.

Holywell did have the consolation of scoring via a superb Zoe Stopford strike.

Llanystumdwy 5 (Malen Williams 5, Ellie Williams 8, 27 & 75, Shona O’Brien 40)
Trearddur Bay 2 (Ashleigh Jones 35 & 74)

Ellie Williams was a hat-trick hero as Llanystumdwy returned to winning ways at Parc Dwyfor.

The hosts were two-up inside 10 minutes, Malen Williams and Ellie Williams on the mark.

Ellie pocketed her second before Ashleigh Jones replied for the Anglesey visitors.

However, close to half time, Shona O’Brien volleyed in an absolute cracker from a corner.

In the second half, Ashleigh Jones reduced the deficit with her second before the final word went to Ellie Williams, who completed her treble on 75 minutes.

Laura Williams scored the only goal of a feisty all-Rhyl derby which the home side won to remain top of the table and keep their unbeaten record.

NFA controlled most of the possession and created the more chances, but despite the game containing 17 minutes of added time in the second half, the visitors could not get past impressive keeper Meg Robinson or the hard-working 1879 defence.
