JD Cymru Premier – December 21, 2021
Flint Town United 3 (Daniel Roberts 28, Mark Cadwallader 75 pen, 77)
Caernarfon Town 4 (Mike Hayes 21, Rob Hughes 22, Noah Edwards 42, Dion Donohue 45+2 pen)
A seven-goal thriller at the Essity Stadium would probably have ended honours even had Flint’s Jack Kenny not struck the bar from point blank range in added time.
As it was, Caernarfon held on for a 4-3 victory which gives them daylight in seventh spot in the JD Cymru Premier.
The Cofis led 4-1 at half time, but after being reduced to 10 men on 63 minutes they had to endure a determined Flint fightback which kept spectators on the edge of their seats till the final whistle.
Caernarfon should have taken a first-minute lead when Darren Thomas found himself in a good position but shot straight at keeper Jon Rushton.
In the 19th minute Flint tried to play the ball across the back, but Rob Hughes intercepted and was clean through on goal only for his somewhat tame effort to be kept out by the home custodian.
The Canaries were ahead soon after when a fine delivery from inside the away half picked out Mike Hayes, who took one touch and slipped the ball smartly past the advancing Rushton for 1-0.
A minute later, Huw Griffiths’ side went two-up when Hughes took advantage of a Kai Edwards slip to run through on goal again and this time finished with aplomb.
Third-place Flint halved the deficit on 28 minutes when a corner from the right was not dealt with by the Caernarfon defence and Dan Roberts scored from close range.
Three minutes before the break Noah Edwards worked the ball onto his left foot and lashed a 20-yard rocket past Rushton for 3-1.
Right on half time, Hayes was adjudged to have been brought down inside the box and Dion Donohue scored from the penalty spot.
Caernarfon looked to be well in control of proceedings in the second half before Aaron Simpson was shown a straight red card for a late challenge in midfield.
Flint began to threaten more against 10 men and cut the arrears on 75 minutes when Mark Cadwallader converted a penalty.
Three minutes later fine work from Callum Bratley led to Cadwallader thundering home to make it 4-3.
Bratley was inches wide with a fierce shot after a dynamic run before Flint’s Ross Weaver was sent off for a second yellow – the second offence being simulation.
In added time, Silkmen substitute Conor Harwood broke to the left byline, crossed and Kenny’s diving header crashed off the bar.
