Late goal specialists Sports bagged a winner five minutes into added time to seal a dramatic victory which returned them to the Premier Division peak.
Beaten for the first time in the league the previous weekend, John Hargreaves’ side were in danger of dropping more points only for Darren Cassidy’s last-gasp decider to make sure that did not happen.
It was an extra special day for assistant-manager Sion Williams, who put the gloves on for the first time in four years to deputise between the posts after the original keeper damaged hand tendons during the warm-up.
Glan Conwy took the lead with an 11th minute penalty from Jamie Jones and it remained 1-0 up to half time with Sports unable to take their chances.
After a few choice words from the management at half time Sports came out a different animal after the break.
Wave after wave of attacks finally gained reward in the 74th minute when Antonio Jacovelli cut inside, beat two men and lashed a shot to the bottom corner.
Both teams now went for it, but with time running out it looked like a draw would be the final outcome.
However, a ball got played over the defence for home striker Ian Griffiths, whose shot hit the post, but it landed for Cassidy who scored with seconds to go.
The celebration scenes at the end were something to behold at The Meadows.
The first league Quarry Derby in 28 years went the way of Penmaenmawr Phoenix.
Although these two sides go head-to-head every pre-season for the Quarry Cup, this was the first time Phoenix had faced Llanfair in a league fixture since 1993.
A crowd of around 200 turned up to see the local rivals lock horns and it was a cagey opening 20 minutes, both sides cautious not to concede.
On 26 minutes Llanfair pressed Phoenix high up the field, which forced a big clearance down the pitch. Alfie Caldecott pressured the away team back-four, who tried to play their way out of trouble and the determination of Pen’s Alex Brownhill was rewarded with a goal for the winger from close range.
Half-time: 1-0
Llanfair came out from the break looking sharper in attack. Some neat play down the right side saw the ball fall to the unmarked Tom Croston, who finished well from outside the area to level it on 64 minutes.
The goal gave Town some confidence and they went on to enjoy the majority of possession for the next 10 minutes. Ryan Dodd fired a strike from 20 yards which was saved well by Dion Jones in the Phoenix goal.
Pen started to get back into the game and Adam Hunt beat his man on the left before finding eventual man of the match Stevie Jones, who chopped past two defenders and fired home to give the home side the lead again with only 14 minutes to play.
Naturally, Llanfair went all out for an equaliser in the last 10 minutes.
While attacking, they lost possession thanks to a fierce challenge from Ian Pattinson, the ball landing at Harry Roberts’ feet who played an inch-perfect cross field delivery into the chest of Alfie Caldecott.
From his first touch, he chipped the ball over the oncoming defender and then in the same movement Caldecott volleyed home to secure the points for the Phoenix.
Phoenix manager Martyn Jones said: “First of all, it was great to see so many down at Cae Sling today.
“It was important to get 3 points today for a couple of different reasons – we’ve lost the last 2 games in disappointing fashion and when you add the pressure of a local derby it was never going to be easy today.
“I thought we were good value for the win in the end.
“There wasn’t much between the 2 teams in the first half, Llanfair had a good spell after half time but I felt we finished strongest. We scored 3 really good goals today of which the lads involved should be proud of.”
Penmaenmawr: Dion Jones, James Lansdowne, Adam Hunt, Daniel Williams, Matthew Hunt, Ian Pattinson, Alex Brownhill, Stevie Jones (Stephen Bibby 88), Alfie Caldecott, Tom Paddock (Cory Young 52), Haydn Griffiths (Harry Roberts 7).
Llanfairfechan: Kyle Jones, Ryan Pope, Jack Jones, Joel Jones, Tom Croston (James Roberts 86), Dan Hughes, Elliot Croston, Cai Jones (Cameron Hales 76), Ryan Dodd, Jamie Haggas, Iestyn Thomas.
It was a memorable day for Rhuddlan as they inflicted just a second league defeat of the season on visitors Meliden.
In a close contest, Town had the most shots on target and it was visiting stand-in keeper Adrian Croughan who kept his side in the game.
The Miners thought they had opened the scoring on 15 minutes when Rhys Dowinton turned in a Sam Haddon free kick, only for it to be chalked off as the referee spotted a foul on Rhuddlan keeper Jordan Baker.
Meliden went straight back on the attack and Haddon played in Ashley New down the left. The captain slotted the ball into the box past the defence to find an unmarked Sam Duffy who fired into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0 after 17 minutes.
Both sides had opportunities for the rest of the half. If the away side had been more clinical, the game could have been out of sight by half time.
Meliden manager Gareth Jones and substitute Sion Brisbane were both shown red cards before the interval.
Half time: Rhuddlan 0 Meliden 1
Into the second half and both teams were trading attacks, with Rhuddlan’s route one style of football being more effective.
On 61 minutes, Josh Brown headed home from a corner.
In the 76th minute, from a Meliden attack, the ball was cleared upfield and fell nicely for Jordan Bellham to run onto and add a second goal for the hosts.
Meliden threw everything at the opposition in search of a leveller, but credit to Baker who kept everything out.
Tom Wickerson struck twice to secure Kinmel Bay three welcome and well-earned points against their visitors at Y Morfa.
The 17-year-old prospect scored on 24 and 71 minutes after Joe Maguire had given Llansannan an early lrad.
Llion Morris scored twice in a vital win for high-flying Llannefydd.
Having beaten the previously undefeated Prestatyn Sports the week before, Gwyndaf Pritchard’s men wanted to keep the good form going.
And the visitors managed to do just that, making it four league wins in a row.
Roberts netted on 10 and 85 minutes, while Luke Appleby also struck after 27.
Jack Williams and Adam Williams replied for Junction on 70 and 89 minutes respectively.
Goals from Michael Walsh and new signing Jordan Worthington ensured Rhyl 1879 made it eight without defeat as they climbed to third in the table.
The hosts were given a good battle by Mochdre, though, who were leapfrogged by their opponents into that third spot following Saturday’s result.
Veteran Walsh notched the only goal of the first half on 31 minutes following fine work from Macauley Taylor.
Recent new arrival from Kinmel Bay, Worthington, came on for the second period and struck on 53 minutes.
Nic Bould had a great game between the sticks for Mochdre, the former Bangor City and Caernarfon Town keeper producing cracking saves from Frankie Davies, Dan Sim and Walsh.
Tirion Griffiths notched a hat-trick for Cerrig as they went seven points clear at the Division One summit.
Griffiths converted a first-half penalty and added two goals in the latter stages of the second half, Tomos Tryfan Jones and Dyfed Baldry also on the mark.
New Glannau signings Harrison Bellis and Aaron Dodwell came up against the club they had just left – Rhyl All Stars – on their debuts.
Bellis scored from the pebalty spot after Tawse Cox had put the visitors in front.
All Stars were unlucky not to pinch it when they hit the underside of the bar in the closing stages.
Amateurs battled back from a goal down to win the match in the second half.
Llysfaen led at the break through Connor Morris, but after the turnaround Joe Jones, Sol Pita and Mark Kelly earned the hosts the points.
It was a sixth win in a row for the home side.
Josh Evans and Paul Vinall grabbed the goals which delivered Rhyl-based NFA a welcome success over Rhos.
Adam Noble levelled for the visitors in the second half before Vinall sealed it five minutes from time.
Stan Farrell hit four first-half goals in this double-figure caning dished out by the Dragons.
Andrew Butterworth plundered a second-half hat-trick, Jamie Grimshaw claimed a double, Callum McMliian-Howden, Wassim Boutoutaou, Tyler Russell Jones and Jack Kearney contributing one goal apiece.
Gerallt Jones grabbed a deserved consolation for Betws.
