Llangefni could not have wished for a better start to the 2021-22 season.

The Anglesey ladies welcomed Welshpool to Cae Bob Parry on Sunday afternoon for their first game of the campaign and the opening competitive match of their “new” history.

The occasion did not disappoint for the locals who came out in hope of goals and entertainment – and they got both!

Llangefni came out of the blocks fast when Hannah Owen broke down the wing and whipped a cross in which took a wicked deflection off a Welshpool player, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

Five minutes later Tash Jones played in Jen Cox, who proved that her goal-scoring form isn’t just reserved for friendlies by making it 2-0.

Twenty-seven minutes in and Tash Jones again released Cox, who netted for her brace, leaving Cefni 3-0 up at half time.

Welshpool, fired up from their half time break, piled the pressure on the hosts. Corner after corner followed until they finally found their breakthrough when Hazel Bliss-Bennett poked past Jess Marshall to give the Powys travellers a lifeline.

The visitors took the game to Llangefni, producing some lovely passing moves and looking more steady at the back in the second half.

This prompted Cefni to make a change and bring on the pacy Lara Cain to stretch the opposition.

In the 85th minute Tash Jones completed a hat-trick of assists for three-goal star Cox, showing they have a great understanding.

Two minutes later Cox turned provider for substitute Cain to tap in at the far post, finishing the afternoon 5-1 to the delight of the packed grandstand.

Player of the match was Hannah Owen.
