Mari Edwards is the new Wrexham AFC Women manager

Wrexham AFC Women have appointed former Airbus coach Mari Edwards as their new manager.

The Dragons announced the appointment on their website this evening.

Edwards will take charge of the team for their inaugural FAW Tier 2 North League season.

The 30-year-old spent four seasons at Airbus and took over as manager in 2019. Ironically, her first game in charge delivered a 4-1 win over Wrexham in a pre-season friendly.

Edwards has been involved in the promotion of girls and women’s football for a number of years, latterly through her role as a development officer with Flintshire Council.

Her first-ever team was Ruthin Under-12’s, then she played for Corwen before in 2014/15 standing out as a prolific goalscorer in the Denbigh Town team which won the North Wales League and reached the Welsh Cup quarter-finals.

The following season Denbigh went one stage further, getting to the Welsh Cup semis where they lost to Llandudno.

Edwards, who hails from Ruthin , has also been a community officer at Bala Town in the past.

She joined Airbus in 2016-17 as assistant player-boss and stepped up to the manager’s role for 2019-20.

Edwards will watch her new team in action at the Racecourse Ground this Sunday, where interim-manager Steven Dale will end his brief stint with a friendly against Northop Hall.
