Women’s Surname Football Sevens: Edwards FC

As I was unable to find 11 Edwards’s I’ve compiled a seven-a-side women’s team from the North Wales football scene, past and present, with that name.

We previously published a Roberts and Owen seven-a-side and before that selected a women’s Thomas XI, Williams XI, Jones XI, Hughes XI, Davies XI, Roberts XI and Evans XI.

This surname series is now complete. We also put together 10 men’s teams.

Rhian Edwards (Denbigh Town)

Goalkeeper who has turned in some impressive performances for Denbigh Town in Division One of the North Wales Women’s League but has missed most of the current season through injury.

Kate Edwards (Wrexham)

Elegant, ball-playing defender who was part of the Wrexham squad which competed so well with the elite in the early days of the Welsh Premier Women’s League, after it went fully national.

Donna Edwards (Bangor City Girls)

A member of the Bangor City sides of the early 2000s which flew the flag so proudly for North Wales women’s football.
Donna was a quick player would chase everything and put her body in front of any ball, a 100% giver every time she took the field.

Louise Edwards (Wrexham)

Member of the Wrexham squad when it was at its strongest in the Welsh Premier Women’s League. Versatile, could do a job in most positions.

Mari Edwards (Airbus)

Took over as manager of Airbus this season and doing a solid job.
Mari is well known in the game for her goal-scoring abilities, especially in her time at Denbigh Town.
Her first-ever team was Ruthin Under-12s, then she played for Corwen before in 2014/15 standing out as a prolific goalscorer in the Denbigh team which won the North Wales League and reached the Welsh Cup quarter-finals.
The following season, with Mari up front, Denbigh went one stage further, getting to the Welsh Cup semis where they lost to Llandudno.
Mari joined Airbus in 2016-17 as assistant player-boss and stepped up to the manager’s role for 2019-20.

She is also a coach for FAW girls regionals, a project she has been part of for eight years, and a youth officer for Urdd Gobaith Cymru.

Lowri Edwards (Wrexham)

One word – goals.
A prolific striker who shared in a very productive attacking partnership at Wrexham alongside Sydney Hinchcliffe, the former Watford, Tottenham, and London Bees forward, who moved on to Hounslow before joining fellow Women’s National League side Yeovil in January.
Edwards regularly banged in twos and threes for Wrexham in the Welsh Premier at the turn of the 2010s.

Llywela Siriol Edwards (Corwen)

Top-scorer for Corwen in their first season in the North Wales Women’s League, notching 12 goals in Division Two in the 2018-19 season.
Has also netted a couple of times in the current much-curtailed season.
Also in tune off the pitch as a great guitar/vocalist.
