Happy birthday to a dynamic football coach and manager – Iwan Williams

Iwan won the Cymru Alliance title and two league cups with Caernarfon Town

Happy birthday to top North Wales football manager and coach Iwan Williams – 36 today.

Hailing from Penrhyndeudraeth, but based in Llanfairpwll, Ynys Môn, Iwan was born on March 28, 1985.

His senior playing career started at Wrexham before he gained a football scholarship at Kansas City College, USA.

Spells in the Welsh Premier League at Porthmadog, Newtown and Connah’s Quay Nomads followed, while he was also club captain at Llandudno and represented Llanfairpwll and Caersws in the Cymru Alliance.

In 2015/16, Iwan truly made his mark in management as he led Caernarfon Town to the Cymru Alliance league title and cup double in his first season.

He also received the Manager of the Season award.

Despite the disappointment of the Canaries being refused promotion to the Welsh Premier League on licence issues, Iwan remained at The Oval and 2016/17 saw Town retain the league cup and finish CAL runners-up.

That season the Cofis also made it all the way to the Welsh Cup semi-finals for the first time in 34 years.

After a promising start to the 2017-18 season, Iwan left Caernarfon in November 2017 to take over at Welsh Premier Llandudno.

Things didn’t work out as well as hoped at Maesdu Park, on or off the field, with difficult personal circumstances making Iwan’s tenure a particularly challenging one.

Nonetheless, he still managed to attain his UEFA Pro Licence as well as becoming a qualified Premier League academy scout.

In January 2020, Iwan became director of football at newly-formed Bangor 1876.

While he set up several initiatives for the club to benefit from in the future, his own playing career came to an end due to injury.

Nine months after arriving at 1876, he joined the management team of Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley at National League North club Chester.

With no football being played in Wales due to the coronavirus pandemic, Iwan decided on the move to keep busy in football and realise an ambition to work in the English pyramid.

As well as success at club level, Iwan has also been a hit with the Ynys Môn representative side, being part of the management when Anglesey won gold at the 2019 Inter-Island Games.

He’s one of life’s battlers and survivors and is deeply committed to three important F’s – family, friends and football.

Penblwydd hapus Iwan – a true diamond.
