With Anglesey being so close to Bangor, it is inevitable some of the cream of the island’s footballing talent has ended up playing for the city over the years.
Mike Smith has seen some great Ynys Mon performers wear the famous all-blue strip over the past six decades.
Webmaster of the Bangor City and Bangor 1876 based Citizens Choice site, Mike shares with Grassroots North Wales readers his all-time Banglesey XI.
A calm, confident goalkeeper, Gareth was a key member of the Bangor side which won the NPL title in 1982 under the management of Dave Elliott.
A larger than life character with strong links to Arsenal and York City before joining Bangor, later to be involved with Wolves and Bolton Wanderers. Chris was a right back who also played sweeper alongside Derek Goulding and Kevin Mooney in the late eighties.
A very skillful attacking full-back whose early days saw him at Manchester United, Chris was a genuine threat down the left and a strong competitive defender.
The complete footballer, hugely powerful, determined and committed. Mark could play full-back, centre-back or midfield. I would rather be able to pick him at least twice!
Another member of the 1982 side who also played Conference football. Played for Bangor City in the 1984 FA Trophy Final and later featured for Cemaes Bay and Porthmadog in the Welsh Premier League. Bangor chairman Elwyn Coffey used to call Mark a “Sherman Tank” and he wasn’t far wrong!
A left-back by trade but a defender revered by older City fans, A team-mate of the likes of George McGowan in a different era, the NPL before the Conference. Rated as one of the club’s finest defenders of the 1950s and 60s. Holyhead man John played professional football for Crystal Palace and Crewe in the 1960s and also wore the colours of Bethesda.
Equally effective at left-back or left-midfield.
A dangerous skillful right-winger Steve could beat his man and send over crosses for the likes of Frank Mottram or cut inside and score himself. A consistent, popular team player who always gave of his best and played with a smile on his face.
He played for Bangor City’s League of Wales title-winning sides in 1993/94 and 1994/95, also turning out for the Citizens in Europe, and later represented Cemaes Bay in the top flight.
After around 20 first team appearances for Wrexham in between 1982-84 Medwyn joined City and showed a fine range of passing in the blues midfield. Well-balanced and attack-minded.
Darren was a team mate of Medwyn’s at Wrexham during the same era, who also joined Bangor and quickly made a name for himself with his spectacular long range shooting from the middle of the park. Also starred for Llangefni Town and Caernarfon.
A former Manchester City youngster Aled was equally at home at left-back or in midfield, with a busy style on the field and an eye for goal. Made several appearances in Europe under both Meirion Appleton and Peter Davenport. Man of the match when Bangor won the 2000 Welsh Cup.
A direct goal-scoring striker, John is fondly remembered not just by City fans but also by those of Stockport County for whom he played league football and Altrincham where he was part of their FA Cup giant-killings side. Formed a deadly double act with Tony Broadhead.
A superb attacking talent with acceleration and a thunderous shot, Viv played for City against Fredrikstad and Atletico Madrid in those unforgettable 1985-86 European Cup Winners’ Cup ties. Unbelievably also played in goal at Hereford in the Welsh Cup the same season.
A great talent and perfect gent, one of a very small band.
The 18-year-old sensation from Gaerwen scored 45 times in all competitions in 1876’s debut 2019-20 season, which saw them coast to the Gwynedd League title with a perfect 16 straight wins.
Dylan also scooped the Supporters Player of the Season award.
The teenager represented Llangefni at junior level before moving on to Bangor City and most recently Bangor 1876.
He has now joined Cymru North club Llangefni Town.
