Happy birthday Chris Davies – a truly top quality manager from Ynys Môn

Give me the name of any manager in North Wales football who won 10 trophies in four seasons in charge of a club.

I guarantee there are not too many, and the only one I can think of is Chris Davies.

Today sees Anglesey-based Chris celebrate his 42nd birthday.

Born on February 9, 1979, Chris was in his late 20’s when he led Trearddur Bay United for two successful seasons in the North Gwynedd and Anglesey Sunday League before the club decided to opt for Saturday football in 2008/09.

In their first season they lifted the NWCFA Junior Cup, beating St Asaph City 2-1 in the final at Denbigh, as well as the Dargie and Thomas and Williams cups on offer within the Anglesey League.

The following campaign they retained the Dargie and scooped the Elias Cup, but the 2010/11 term proved extra special as Trearddur were crowned Anglesey League champions and landed the Dargie, Megan and Thomas and Williams cups to complete a quadruple.

They were also beaten finalists in the Junior Cup and Elias Cups and boasted a 112-goal hero in Asa Thomas.

In 2011/12, Bay were promoted to the Gwynedd League and just missed out on the title, finishing runners-up to Penrhyndeudraeth, but added the Cwpan Gwynedd to their collection.

Trearddur defeated Llanystumdwy 2-0 in the Cwpan Gwynedd Final at Porthmadog which was decided by two second half goals from Asa Thomas, boosting his total to 41 for the season – 22 of them for Bay.

It was the perfect sign-off for manager Davies, who then announced he was stepping down to concentrate on coaching his young son’s under-seven team.

He left the club in great shape, with successor Mark Williams going on to win the Gwynedd League title as invincibles and the Welsh Alliance championship in 2015-16. Unfortunately the club’s ground did not meet the criteria to elevate to the Cymru Alliance.

Chris returned to joint-manage Trearddur Bay United in 2017-18 alongside Nathan Owen, but sadly the club reluctantly decided to resign from the Welsh Alliance League for the 2018/19 season due to a player shortage.

They returned in 2019-20 as Trearddur Bay Bulls, amalgamating with Anglesey League champions Bryngwran Bulls.

Chris is chairman of the new club, who had a fine debut season in the Gwynedd League, finishing fourth.
