North East Wales Football League plan to break new ground and form women’s veterans league

There are plenty of opportunities to participate in girls and women’s football these days, but it’s a bit different for what one could class ‘veteran’ ladies.

The North East Wales Football League have decided to step in and set up a Vets League for women of a certain age who might feel they cannot quite compete with the younger players any more, but still have plenty to offer the game.

The new league will cater for players aged over 35.

That’s certainly not to say women of 35 or over are ‘finished’ – far from it.

In the North Wales Women’s League there are at least two ladies in their mid-50s still competing very much on an even keel with players half their age and below.

The pair I am referring to are super-fit and can easily do 90 minutes regularly.

But a vets league is just another option in a world where female football continues to grow and grow, so hats off to the NEWFL.

Age is nowhere near the factor it used to be in football. There are leagues for all ages nowadays, in both regular and walking football, for players up to pensioner status and well-above.

Veterans League application forms for season 2021/22 are now available on the North East Wales League website.
