FAW keen to meet North Wales women’s football associations to discuss the future

The FAW is keen to meet with women’s football associations in all areas of North and Mid Wales to discuss ways of delivering their needs.

One of the concerns expressed over the running of the North Wales Women’s Football League last season was that its officers were North East Wales based and therefore teams on the coast and in central Wales were at times feeling left out in the cold.

It is believed a number of coastal clubs supported the inception of a North Wales Coast FA Women’s League for the 2019/20 season, but that plan was rejected by the FAW Officers Committee on Monday.

The proposed league would have catered for 14 coast clubs, but no guarantees were given that teams in North East Wales or Central Wales would be involved.

After Monday’s meeting in Cardiff, FAW spokesman Matthew Close said of the NWCFA application: “The request did not adhere to the requirements of FAW Rule 95, regarding the sanction of Leagues and had to be rejected.

“The North Wales Women’s League will continue to operate in the same way as last season, however the FAW acknowledged that the League has member clubs representing North East Wales FA, North Wales Coast FA and Central Wales FA and agreed that a meeting should be arranged between the three parties and the FAW, to discuss this matter further, with a view to further developing women’s football in the areas in the future.”

Clubs who wish to join the North Wales Women’s League this season must do so by August 17. Fixtures are due to start on September 8.

A meeting of the league will then take place at the Springfield Hotel in Holywell on August 21 at 7pm, where the make-up of the two divisions for 2019-20 will be confirmed.
