Three new teams join North Wales Women’s Football League – but what does the future hold?

Three new teams were admitted into the North Wales Women’s Football League at its AGM last night.

Connah’s Quay Nomads, Llanberis and NFA (North Football Association) all signed up for the forthcoming campaign, bringing the league’s membership up to 19.

Caernarfon Town, who resigned from the Welsh Premier League last season and thereafter played just one match in the Supplementary Cup, have committed to the NWWFL this term.

Despite the good news of fresh recruits, however, the future of the league remains uncertain.

Earlier this month, it emerged that a new North Wales Coast FA Women’s League could be formed for the 2019-20 season.

Thirteen of the current 19 NWWFL sides are coast based, so a split would leave just five women’s teams running in the North East Wales area, with Llanfair domiciled in Central Wales.

At Tuesday’s NWWFL AGM, chairman Cliff Evans said the proposed coast league issue is in the hands of the FAW and further information is awaited.

It was also revealed at the meeting that two unnamed NWWFL teams – one in Division One and one in Division Two – have lodged appeals with the FAW and that until they are settled, the make-up of the divisions for 2019-20 could not be ascertained.

The Division One champions for 2018-19 are still to be crowned. The NWWFL decided on a shared championship after Bethel and Llanfair finished level on points and goal difference, but the matter is believed to have gone to the FAW.
