More time needed to set up North Wales women’s football leagues

The new-style North Wales Women’s Football League needs more time to finalise its set-up for the 2020-21 season.

The league’s AGM took place on Tuesday, but due to the late opening of the Comet playing registration system by the FAW, a delay is necessary to finalise things.

Two leagues are planned – the North Wales Women’s League (run by the North East Wales FA but not bearing their name) and another co-ordinated by the North Wales Coast FA.

The following season, 2021-22, a new pyramid system will enter Welsh women’s football.

Tier 1 remains a National League administered by the FAW, with the champions qualifying for the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Tier 2 will be regionalised with new northern and southern leagues, that will be affiliated to the FAW.

These Tier 2 leagues will be administrated by independent management committees with increased support from the FAW.

The licence application process for Tier 1 and 2 will be open to all clubs in Wales for the 2021/22 season.

As well as an overhaul to the top two tiers, a new U19s Development League will be introduced.

The Area Associations will be responsible for operating Tiers 3 and 4 in the Recreational Level of the pyramid.

With an aim to increase participation in the women’s game in Wales, the Recreational Level will be allowed more flexibility in the rules and regulations to achieve this objective.

Club training up and running

Meanwhile, a number of North Wales women’s teams have started socially-distanced training for the season ahead.

A reminder to all NWWFL clubs that the registration window to play in the league for the 20/21 season is now OPEN.

Go through the ‘MyComet’ page to affiliate and join for the upcoming season.
