Eight years ago a strong Wrexham side proved too powerful for a lower level yet plucky Prestatyn outfit in the Welsh Cup.

Prestatyn, flying high in the North Wales League, had caused an upset in the previous round by knocking out Welsh Premier Northop Hall, but Wrexham proved a much tougher hurdle.

In an even opening Prestatyn posed plenty of problems with their pace up front, Sue Harrison proving a handful for the Dragons’ defence.

Steph Taylor had the ball in the net for the visitors on 19 minutes, but was ruled offside.

The deadlock was broken on 27 minutes when a good run and cross from Lowri Edwards set up Nicola Jones to fire in from eight yards.

Prestatyn responded and only a goal-line clearance from Kate Edwards denied them an instant equaliser.

It was proving to be a real battle with no quarter given, but just before the interval Wrexham struck a crucial blow when Jones netted her second from a Jade Davies assist.

Five minutes into the second half Dave Taylor’s side put one foot firmly in the quarter-finals when Syd Hinchcliffe was felled in the box and Lyndsey Rodger slammed home from the spot.

Chances were now coming more regularly for Wrexham, Jones going close to her hat-trick with Davies and Hinchcliffe also not far off.

In the 65th minute Chloe Foster was brought down in the box and Rodger converted again from 12 yards.

Ten minutes later the issue was well and truly settled when Hinchcliffe’s free-kick released Lowri Edwards to put away number five.

Liv Pridding-Hull’s header released Edwards to slam in her second nine minutes from time.

Rodger was voted Wrexham’s player of the day, but credit to the hosts for giving their all against higher level opponents.

Wrexham secretary and substitute goalkeeper Amber Dean paid tribute to Prestatyn for their efforts.

“For the first 15 to 25 minutes Prestatyn played really well,” she said.

“They passed the ball around nicely and kept us out.

“After we scored, though, we pretty much took over. The pitch was a mudbath, but we still managed to out-pass and eventually outplay them.“

North Wales Women’s League action

Kinmel Bay moved up to second in the North Wales Women’s League with a 10-0 thrashing of Holyhead.

Rosie Hughes hit a hat-trick, Hollie Groves and Steph Walsh netted two apiece, and the rest came from Cassandra Thomas, Alexandria Smith and Rachel Marland.

It was Bay’s third win in five starts and moved them to within three points of leaders Airbus.

North Wales Girls Football League

Caernarfon romped to a 9-1 victory at Llay in the under-14 section.

Heledd Evans, Danielle Barnfield, Leonie Prytherch and Gemma Thomas shared the goals for the Cofis.

Northop Hall took the honours 4-0 at Kinmel Bay, while Prestatyn thrashed Rhyl Hearts 9-0, Azaria Warburton, Lili Davies, Shannon Hobbs, Rachel Lloyd and Ashleigh Mills all featuring on the scoresheet.
