Amlwch Town Ladies manager hails squad’s adaptability

Amlwch Town Ladies joint-manager Mo Eynon believes the versatility of his squad can stand them in good stead again this season.

Many times in the last campaign, which saw the Anglesey side land their biggest achievement in lifting the North Wales League Division Two title, players were needed to play out of their natural position, but on each occasion did a quality job.

Experienced striker Gail Manning adapted well to a deeper role, while Shannon Thomas proved dependable in several areas of the pitch.

The squad commenced socially-distanced training last week and the response was very encouraging.

Although defender Sara Furlong and attacker Michelle O’Hagan were unavailable last term, the return of Charley Smith from The New Saints added strength at the back.

New signings Catrin Evans, Ceri Slaney, Beth Jones and Ffion Owen were also a big success for the all-blues.

Mo said: “It definitely added to the squad with Charley coming back from TNS. We missed both Sara and Michelle to be fair. Both are good players and were an important part of the team the previous season.

“With the squad we have we are able to utilise players in a variety of positions. Mixing it up and changing things when needed.

“For instance seeing Shannon in one of your articles say “she didn’t know what her position was because she played all over” That’s because you know Shannon will give you 100% wherever she plays and is adaptable.

“It’s important to have players who can and will do that. Gail was asked to play a different role last season, a position she hadn’t played before, but took to it because it’s what we needed as a team.

“Myself and Charlotte (Webb, co-manager) are really lucky in that we have a squad of players like that. They all want to do what’s best for each other and the team.

“It’s good to be back in training and can’t wait to get back playing. Hopefully won’t be too long until we can look forward to a new season.”
