Amlwch Women sign five stars of Ynys Môn squad

Amlwch Town have capitalised on the euphoria surrounding Ynys Môn women’s success at the recent Inter-Island Games by signing five of the squad which made it all the way to the final.

Ffion Owen, Ceri Slaney and Beth Jones join the Anglesey club from Caernarfon Town, while Catrin Evans transfers from Bethel and Ceri Lois Thomas lands at Lon Bach via Bethesda Athletic.

Ynys Môn women reached untold heights at last month’s Games staged on Anglesey, making the final where they lost just 2-1 to Isle of Man.

Karen Williams’ side had beaten Western Isles in the group stage before seeing off Jersey in a memorable semi-final.

Amlwch Town’s Lexi Crawley was the women’s tournament top-scorer with five goals. Other quality players from Amlwch to feature at the Games included Cerys Gadd, Sara Furlong, Laura Pritchard-Eynon, Carol Lewis and Paige Williams.

Now they have been joined by Owen, Slaney, Jones, Evans and Thomas to form an island-based dream team for the 2019-20 season.

Amlwch had an encouraging campaign in North Wales League Division Two last time out and finished the season in style by lifting the Supplementary Cup Group B trophy at Rhyl, beating Wrexham 2-1 in the final with goals from Gadd and Crawley.

Mo Eynon and Charlotte Bethany Webb will manage Amlwch in the forthcoming season, with Tony Fitzmaurice taking on the role of assistant.

“We’re looking to build on upon last year’s excellent success by signing some outstanding new faces,” said Fitzmaurice.

“These players want to be at Amlwch Town because they know something special is happening.”

Ffion Owen

Goal-getting midfielder, aged 23, who has been one of Caernarfon Town’s key players of recent seasons. Specialises in spectacular goals.

Ceri Slaney

Promising young midfield player who rose through the ranks at Caernarfon Town before joining Llandudno last season, then returning to the Canaries. Prominent on the right-wing during Inter-Island Games.

Ceri Lois

Fast and fleet-footed striker. Grassroots North Wales Women’s Young Player of the Season 2017/18, having notched 28 goals in all competitions for Bangor City. North Wales Division Two title-winner with Bethesda Athletic this season. Aged 18. Struggled with injury last season and is due shoulder operation.

Catrin Evans

Grassroots North Wales Young Player of the Season 2018-19. Aged just 16, made debut for Bethel in January and scored a sensational 18 goals in 12 matches. Also scored Anglesey’s goal in the Inter-Island Games Final.

Beth Jones

Caernarfon Town defender last season who was a member of the exciting young Bangor City side of the 2017-18 campaign. Aged 18. Reads the game well, confident in carrying the ball out of defence.
