12 months on…what have Ynys Môn’s female football heroes been up to?

Twelve months ago women’s football on Ynys Môn took a massive leap forward.

Against the odds, Anglesey’s ladies made it all the way to the 2019 Inter-Island Games final.

They lost 2-1 to the Isle of Man in the showpiece game at Holyhead, but still picked up a magnificent silver medal for their efforts.

Ynys Môn entered the tournament on their home island with no form to speak of in previous Games.

In four competitions, Anglesey’s females had been victorious in just one of their 14 matches, but they were a different proposition on home soil.

They got off a perfect start with a 3-1 victory over Western Isles, Lexi Crawley, the match-winner for Amlwch Town in the Supplementary Cup Final a month earlier, grabbing a hat-trick for the hosts.

Despite losing their second group game 3-2 to Hitra, Crawley and Jordanne Greenough with late goals to almost snatch a point for the hosts, Anglesey finished top of their pool on goal difference.

The semi-final was something special for Ynys Môn as they overcame a fine Jersey outfit 1-0, Crawley with a stunning decider to make it five goals in three matches.

Based on form during the competition, the Isle of Man probably entered the final as marginal favourites.

Trailing 2-0 at half time, Anglesey again displayed tremendous spirit to fight back, score through 16-year-old newcomer Catrin Evans, and lose just 2-1 in the end to the Manx.

Twelve months on, how has the Ynys Môn squad been faring?

Nicky Davies

Former Liverpool and Wales international keeper has not played a game since last year’s final. She decided to hang up her gloves after the Games.

Paige Williams

Attacking right-back had a marvellous season for North Wales League Division Two champions Amlwch Town.

Carol Lewis

Skippered Amlwch to the Division Two title this season. Solid defensively throughout, as she was at the Games.

Laura Eynon

Decided to retire after the Island Games. Did sign back on for Amlwch, but only for emergencies. She was more than happy to see the girls go from strength-to-strength.

Sara Furlong

Featured little during the season due to injury and work commitments.

Cerys Gadd

Awesome as always, scored 12 goals for Amlwch’s title-winning team. Joint Managers’ Player of the Season.

Ceri Slaney

An operation meant she featured less than she’d hoped for Amlwch, but still contributed seven goals for the team.

Lexi Crawley

Grassroots North Wales Player of the Season after finishing Amlwch’s top-scorer with 20 goals as well as being leading markswoman at the Games.

Ffion Owen

Midfield star topped the North Wales League goals chart (league goals only) with 19. Players’ Player of the Season and Committee’s Player of the Season at Amlwch.

Catrin Evans

Great first season at Amlwch, adding 14 goals to the 18 she netted last term – her first as a senior – for Bethel. Joint Goal of the Season winner for Amlwch.

Emma Roberts

Cardiff Met student went on to play regularly in Sunday league matches, as well as BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) games.

Anna Roberts

Former Hartpury University and Gloucestershire county player, not yet signed for anyone but keeping fit and is ready if opportunities arise.

Ceri Pritchard

Substitute keeper for the Games had a good season with Division Two champions Amlwch.

Beth Jones

Slotted in nicely at left-back for new club Amlwch.

Erin Maloney

Netted a fantastic 21 goals for Division One club Bethel – the highest individual total across North Wales.

Angharad Evans

Joined a Bethel squad packed with young talent. Settled in well at club following title-winning 2018-19 season at Bethesda.

Jordanne Greenough

Was in fine goal-scoring form for Llandudno before the club resigned from the Welsh Premier League. Signed for Bethel and scored on debut.

Ceri Lois

Signed for Amlwch but her troublesome shoulder injury ruled her out for the whole season. Still on the long road to recovery with further setbacks happening recently. Everyone in North Wales football wishes Ceri all the best.
