Lefties 2: More left-foot specialists in North Wales women’s football

By popular demand it’s back – a celebration of left-foot specialists in North Wales Women’s Football.

Last night’s six-player feature was nowhere near enough, with several people coming forward to say who we could have selected.

Anyway this is the last one for a while at least now – can have too much of a good thing. Thanks for all your support.

Sioned Bohana

Played some of the best football of her career for Llandudno in the Welsh Premier League this season.

Sioned has an exceptional left-foot, team-mates past and present say it.

Players like Heledd Evans and Katie Louise Bowe, who is the best leftie of the lot.

A 100% committed defender who will give it everything from first whistle to last, Sioned uses her left to supply neat passes and also score goals.

Back in 2016-17, she netted eight for the Caernarfon Town side which won the North Wales League title.

Elin Arwen

One of the best left-backs in the North Wales League.

Former Bethel player who returned from a break to join Llanberis this season.

Strong tackler who possesses a cultured left foot.

Has been named Player of the Match many times this season, on one occasion winning a pack of Jaffa Cakes.

Claire Colville

One of the matriarchs of North Wales football now having reached a mature age (but still young enough to have plenty of laughs).

Claire generally operates at left-back where she has turned in many great performances over the years for Llandudno and Llandudno Junction.

Unfortunately, injuries have held her back in the last couple of seasons, but she remains determined to carry on playing.

Claire is the younger of two twins by 10 minutes to Sarah, who is Llandudno Ladies manager.

As well as putting in loads of work in defence, Claire’s left foot can also deliver fine passes and crosses.

Ellie Sandiford

Ellie admits her right foot is merely for standing on – her left foot does just about everything for her on the football field.

Formerly with the Rhyl Academy and Kinmel Bay Girls, the 20-year-old played for Prestatyn before joining newly-formed North Wales League Division Two side Connah’s Quay Nomads this season.

Ellie has a fierce left-foot strike. She recalls one of her cannonballs breaking a keeper’s wrist some years ago.

One of two of her set-piece deliveries have resulted in goals for Nomads this season too.

Gwawr Williams

In the words of her manager, Denbigh Town’s John Clayton: “Gwawr is tenacious in the tackle, battles for every ball, great engine and scores her fair share of goals from midfield with driving runs and powerful shots from distance.”

All these gifts coming courtesy of a smashing left-foot which makes Gwawr, a past North Wales League title winner with Denbigh, well worthy of a place in this lefties’ list.

Emily Morris

One of triplets, Emily has regularly played in the same side as sisters Lucy and Charlotte over the years.

Over to manager John Clayton again: “Emily is skillful, a great attacking left back who delivers crosses into the box with accuracy from advanced positions, good defensively too.”

Emily plays for Denbigh Town, where she has won the North Wales League championship and reached the Welsh Cup semis.
