MMA: Get ready for this – It’s Katie v Ffion on the Rise of the Welsh Warriors show

From the second it was announced it has been the talk of the women’s fight scene in North Wales.

Ffion Williams v Katie Jones on the Rise of the Welsh Warriors show in Criccieth this May promises to be a cracker.

The 20-year-old Ffion is well-known for her goal scoring ability with Bethel in the North Wales Women’s Football League, but is also well-respected kickboxer who represents Gorilla Martial Arts and Fitness in Bangor.

Katie, who turns 16 on January 29, fights out of the MPMA gym in Porthmadog and has won both of her bouts to date.

The girls will clash in a K1 contest on a May 9 bill which includes the rematch between Caernarfon heavyweights Alan Mark Owen (Blacks) and Alan Mark Roberts (Slim).

Ffion’s full debut in K1 came last October against England’s Megan Johnston in Sheffield. The Welsh girl, trained by Kyle Rowlands at Gorilla MA, won on a unanimous decision.

The Anglesey girl is also one of the best female footballers in North Wales. Last season she scored 20 goals as Bethel were crowned joint North Wales League Division One champions and this term has found the net 10 times.

Katie’s two combat wins came last year, against Rachel Thomas in Criccieth in April and versus Tammy Ward at Eirias Park, Colwyn Bay, in October.

The teenager is well aware she is in for a tough test against a girl five years her senior, but intends to work her hardest to be ready for victory on the big night.

Katie said: “It will be by far the toughest fight. but I am determined, will be putting in 100% effort and will be 10 times better by May.”

MPMA’s leading trainer and British kickboxing champion Marvin Pritchard added: “If you could place a bet on this fight right now, the odds would definitely be against young Katie.

“Ffion Williams is five years her senior and a very strong, physical and experienced fighter who is well respected in the fighting scene. This is by far Katie’s hardest fight to date but a challenge she willingly wants to undertake.

“Believe me I’ve made sure she is not going into it this with her eyes closed. She knows that if she wants this then in the next 4 months we will have to leave no stone unturned in training to make sure she is ready.”
