Has Mountain Rangers striker Sam Williams set a new North Wales goalscoring record?

What is the record for the most individual goals scored in a single senior North Wales football match?

That was the question many were asking after Sam Williams of Mountain Rangers netted no less than TWELVE times in his team’s 16-0 away victory at CPD Cefni in the Anglesey League on Saturday.

I have been reporting on North Wales football for 32 years and I personally cannot remember a player scoring that many in one game at any level.

However, I cannot recall everything that has happened since 1987 and while I was employed on newspapers in certain areas, I may have missed some amazing net-busting feats in other parts of the north.

Anyhow, starting off 2020 with a quadruple hat-trick is quite a feat by Williams, who has now amassed 33 league goals and 44 in all competitions this season.

A tough encounter looked on the cards at Plas Arthur for Rangers, who had been held 3-3 at home by Cefni in the league back in August.

Cefni had also beaten Rangers 1-0 in the Elias Cup in September, although that result was later overturned as the Anglesey team had fielded an ineligible player.

And the Rhosgadfan men had whipped Cefni 5-0 in the Megan Cup in October.

Remarkably, Rangers are due to return to Cefni next Saturday (January 18) in the Dargie Cup.

Saturday’s game was all about Sam Williams, who opened his account after just 30 seconds when breaking through the home defence. By half time he had scored four.

That man Williams then scored three in the opening three minutes of the second half and proceeded to net a dozen in total.

He then turned provider with assists for Terry Watkinson, Sion Lloyd, Osian Hughes and finally Simon Kay.

In all a clinical display from the Rangers as they closed the gap on leaders Cemaes Bay to three points with two games in hand.
