Rugby Union: Ben at the double but Port are well beaten by Cofis

Two tries from Ben Humphreys failed to save Porthmadog from a sound 64-15 defeat in their Gwynedd Cup fixture at a dominant Caernarfon 2nd XV.

In the end a clinical polished performance from the Cofis dashed any hopes of Port reaching the quarter-finals.

Porthmadog, as they have many times this season, started slowly and gave away a try within the first few minutes.

A relatively good period of play, however, made the spectators believe they were going to see a competitive match.

Port scored a try after a sustained period of pressure through No 8 stalwart Humphreys and were only behind 12-5 after half an hour’s play.

Caernarfon then turned the screws with dynamic set plays and effective running, scoring three tries before half time.

Port were ineffective at the breakdown and Caernarfon took advantage during the second half with something of a try-fest before Manocha Lewis, Huw Hughes and Tomos Williams linked up beautifully to put Ben Humphreys in for his second try in the last play with what even the Cofis coaches regarded as possibly the best score of the match.

Tomos Ifan Hughes converted to add to a previous penalty kick, making the score 64-15 when the final whistle blew.

On a positive note, Porthmadog fielded a full squad of 22 with other players on the sidelines who had bought their boots with them if needed.

The boys will have to regroup and focus on their 2020 fixtures and will be hoping for an improvement in performance in their next friendly away to Bethesda seconds on January 18.
