Friday night football: Report – Caernarfon Town 2 Cardiff Met 1; Cymru North action

Caernarfon Town 2 (Jones 29, Craig 77) Cardiff Met University 1 (Lam 62)

Nathan Craig delivered a 77th minute winner for a Caernarfon side which remain among the front-runners in the Cymru Premier.

Craig’s alertness enabled him to reach a loose ball first and score after his penalty had been kept out by keeper Will Fuller.

The Canaries sit fifth, six points clear of Cefn Druids in sixth spot and just three behind second-place Barry Town United.

Eliot Evans went close with a first minute free kick for the visitors before Town began to dominate.

Cai Jones was unable to find an open goal from an angle after pushing the ball past keeper Fuller, who seconds later did well to keep out Sion Bradley’s long range effort.

The deadlock was broken in the 29th minute when Darren Thomas brilliantly pinched the ball in midfield and released Cai Jones, who finished calmly in a one-on-one situation against Fuller.

Mael Davies had a chance at the other end, but delayed his shot too long, then Bradley held the ball up well before finding Thomas, whose firm strike was blocked by Fuller’s feet.

Half time came with the match far from won. Four minutes into the second period, Thomas nodded narrowly wide for the Cofis from a near post corner.

Met rallied and equalised in the 62nd minute when Evans’ shot was thwarted by Alex Ramsay, but Jordan Lam easily put away the loose ball.

Back came the Canaries, Thomas inches wide with a sublime instinctive volley before substitute Jamie Breese’s attempt on the turn was acrobatically tipped over by Fuller.

Soon after Danny Brookwell was tripped just inside the box by Fuller as the pair went for a loose ball and referee John Andrew Jones pointed to the spot.

The normally impeccable Craig saw his somewhat tame kick saved, but the former Everton midfielder was first to the rebound to score.

Sub Daniel Spencer was within a fraction of poking in an equaliser for Met, but the final whistle blew on a deserved Town triumph.

Flint Town United won 1-0 at Rhyl to cut Prestatyn Town’s lead at the summit to just two points with the same amount of games played.

Callum Bratley’s second-minute goal was enough to secure the Silkmen the points at Belle Vue.

Flint had midfielder Chris Li sent off on 32 minutes for a second booking, while Cai Owen was dismissed five minutes from time for the hosts after receiving two cautions.

Danny Davies put leaders Prestatyn ahead in the 32nd minute at Guilsfield, but in no time Jolyon Harries levelled and it finished one-apiece.

Colwyn Bay and Bangor City shared the spoils 1-1 at Llanelian Road.

Mitch Bryant handed the Seagulls a 21st-minute advantage, but Nicolas Delvecchio made it all-square before the interval and that was the end of the scoring.
