Six of the Best: North Wales matches well worth a watch this weekend

Will Prestatyn Town be celebrating at Guilsfield?

six top north wales football matches in focus

Friday, November 29

Cymru North (7.45 pm – pitch inspection friday 1.15 pm)
Guilsfield v Prestatyn Town

Interesting one this.

After a perfect run of 10 straight league wins leaders Prestatyn were beaten 3-2 at Penrhyncoch last weekend.

How will they recover from that setback? Another long trip to Guilsfield will certainly test the resolve of the Seasiders.

Guils are a handily-placed fifth in the table and just two points off the top three.

Prestatyn were narrow 1-0 winners over the Powys side at the Motion Finance Stadium last August, a Rob Hughes penalty settling the issue.

Saturday, November 30

Welsh Alliance League Lock Stock Cookson Cup quarter-finals (1.45 pm)
Denbigh Town v Bodedern Athletic

Can Denbigh Town’s Jake Walker (red) keep up his tremendous scoring record this weekend?

Should be a corker at Central Park.

Welsh Alliance Division One leaders Denbigh are unbeaten in five and stormed into the last 16 of the FAW Trophy with a 5-1 win at Nefyn last weekend.

Bodedern, currently seventh in WAL Division One, have shown mixed form this season but did beat Denbigh 1-0 at Cae Ty Cristion in a league game back in September.

Welsh National League Premier Division (2 pm)
Rhos Aelwyd v Rhostyllen

Rhos Aelwyd celebrate another FAW Trophy win

This will be an interesting rematch.

Aelwyd recently upset the odds with a 4-2 win at Rhostyllen in the FAW Trophy.

However, Rhostyllen are top of the Premier Division, and did beat the Aelwyd 2-1 at home in the league back in August.

Aelwyd are flying in the FAW Trophy and should have plenty of confidence based on their recent performances.

Anglesey League Dargie Cup round one (1.30 pm)
Pentraeth Res v Holyhead Hotspur Res

On their best form Pentraeth can upset anyone – as they proved in knocking Mountain Rangers out of the Benllech Car Boot Trophy recently.

In Hotspur, Pen will take on a young side in really good touch. Tom Scott’s team have been awesome away from home and are sure to provide Pentraeth with a massive test.

NWCFA Junior Cup second round (1.30 pm)
Bangor 1876 v Llanfairfechan Town

Bangor 1876 goal machine Jamie Petrie could be a big danger to Llanfairfechan

Bangor 1876’s perfect run ended recently with defeats against Llanrwst United and Ruthin Town in the FAW Trophy and Welsh Cup respectively.

However, with all due respect, those were competitions Gwynedd League side 1876 were never going to win.

Their hopes of success in the Junior Cup are much more realistic, although they have a tricky tie on their hands on Saturday in the shape of Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League opponents Llanfairfechan.

Andrew Croston’s Llanfair side will be really up for this one.

NWCFA Junior Cup second round (1.30 pm)
Rhuddlan Town v Abergele

Rhuddlan Town face a tough task against Abergele

The top two sides in the Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Premier Division meet in this one.

Both teams have 20 points apiece, and their most recent meeting at Abergele ended 3-3.

Inseparable.

It is a very hard game to call, and much will depend on who is most up for it on the day.

No surprise if it ends with extra time and penalties.
