Women’s recreational league: Caitlin at the double as Holywell make winning start

Holywell FC Girls and Ladies FC got off to a flyer in the Recreational League

Holywell FC Girls and Ladies made a winning start to life in the North Wales Recreational League with a 3-0 win over CPD Genod Henllan on Sunday.

The Wellwomen also compete in Division Two of the North Wales Women’s League, but with many players being beginners, they will need time to adjust to the demands of that level.

What better idea, therefore, than to build up their skills, team-spirit and confidence in the Recreational League, which is brilliantly filling a chasm in North Wales women’s football.

Holywell took the lead through Caitlin Hadaway about 10 minutes into Sunday’s game at Mostyn, a powerful strike from outside the box which flew into the bottom corner.

The nine-a-side match comprised three segments of 20 minutes and in the second of these, Leah Davies-Williams made it 2-0 with a lovely calm finish.

Another composed effort from Caitlin in the same half put the Wellwomen three goals up. In the end, Caitlin won player of the match, but the whole team did well, as did the Henllan side, who will only come on for the experience.

One other plus for Holywell was the return of experienced captain Sarah Massey after six weeks out with injury.

After the game, Wellwomen manager Tony Doyle said: “The ladies played some great football, applying everything we do at training into the game.

“It was also great to see supporters travel to Mostyn to watch the Wellwomen too.

“Seeing as it’s our first ever season, and a lot of our players are mums to the young U12/U10 girls and never played football before, the development league is perfect to build confidence and that is one of our objectives for joining this league.”
