FAW Women’s Welsh Cup: Rosie scores six in Denbigh rout, wins for Bethel, Nomads, Rhyl and Llanfair

FAW Women’s Cup first round reports – October 20, 2019

Denbigh Town 8 Northop Hall 2

Rosie Hughes scored an astonishing six goals as Denbigh romped into the next round at the expense of fellow North Wales League Division One side Hall.

Former Llandudno striker Hughes took on the starring role with a double hat-trick, Elen Mair Jones and Emma Roden also on target for the home side.

Hall replied through Becca Hughes and Eleanor Thomas, but the game was closer than the scoreline suggests.

It was just 2-1 to Town at half time, then Hall levelled after the break, but fitness took over in the last 25 minutes when the hosts proved unstoppable.

Bethel 2 Airbus 0

Erin Maloney’s second half double ensured safe passage to the next round for Bethel in this all-Division One clash at Nantporth, Bangor.

Airbus defended well throughout and made life difficult for the Caernarfon area side, who had edged a 3-2 league win over the Wingmakers earlier this season.

The visitors were without key players, top-scorer Becky Lees, captain Abbie Williams, Tegan Hewitt and Emma Parry.

Connah’s Quay Nomads 3 Pwllheli 1

A much improved performance from a Pwllheli side which had lost 9-1 at Nomads in a league encounter seven days earlier.

Shannon Hobbs notched the only goal of the first half for Sara Hilton’s home team.

Three minutes into the second half, a Rachael Nattrass cross went in off a Pwllheli player.

Hobbs soon made it 3-0, but the visitors got some reward for a battling display when Bess Roberts netted a minute from time.

Llanfair United 3 Amlwch Town 1

Skipper Mary Bailey netted twice for a Llanfair outfit which was given a great contest by opponents from a division below.

Central defender Bailey broke the deadlock with a volley from a Nora Davies corner.

Another Davies flag-kick was touched in at the near post by Sarah Ellis to make it 2-1 at the interval.

Amlwch reduced the deficit after the turnaround when Lexi Crawley scored from a rebound following a good stop from keeper Tracey Godsell.

However, the victory was sealed when Bailey headed home from a Sarah Ellis corner, again displaying how dangerous Llanfair were from set-pieces.

Rhyl 7 Wrexham 0

New signing Niomi Taylor and outstanding attacker Natalie Harrison both struck twice for a dominant Rhyl.

Taylor opened the scoring and a Ceri Purvis penalty made it 2-0 at half time.

Both goalkeepers produced good saves in that opening 45 minutes.

After the changeover Harrison grabbed Rhyl’s third with a fine strike before the same player set up Taylor for her brace.

Harrison then struck the crossbar, but Catrin Davies was following in to make it five.

The ever-impressive Harrison then lashed home a penalty and Sade Benjamin rounded off the scoring.
