Welsh National League Premier Division: Park stop the rot, Brymbo remain top, Holywell on fire

On the back of alarming consecutive defeats by 5-2 and 5-1, as well as discovering they would likely lose last season’s Premier Division title on a technicality, Queen’s Park needed to stop the rot at Saltney on Saturday.

And to a large degree it was mission accomplished for Dave Evans’ side, who entered the game at Sandy Lane on their worst results streak in more than 12 months.

The Park knew that Saltney away is as tough as it comes – and so it proved.

Chances were few and far between before on the half-hour a magical little run by Mikey Latham led him into the box, and as he looked up he unselfishly rolled the ball square for James Gregory to finish well.

Saltney started on top in the second half. The Park could not keep hold of the ball and some sloppy passes allowed the Bordermen to gain a foothold in the game.

A great save by the Park’s keeper ended with him nursing a bad shoulder injury and although he bravely tried to carry on he found himself struggling and had no chance of stopping Saltney’s 53rd minute equaliser – a 30-yard screamer from Jack Roberts.

A quick shuffle of the pack was needed so Barry Torrence took over the gloves for the visitors.

The Park steadied themselves and created some chances. They almost won it when Latham let fly from distance and was unlucky as the ball hit the post.

Rest of the Premier

Leaders Brymbo overcame Penycae 3-0, Jamie Cumming (2) and Andy Noonan with the goals, while Rhostyllen romped to a 5-1 result at Brickfield Rangers, Olie Allman, Steve Jones (2), Lee McBurney and Andrew Bithell sharing the away total.

Llay Welfare came back from two-down to grab a 2-2 draw at Rhos Aelwyd. Daniel Harrison and Ryan Jenkins struck for the Aelwyd, Tom Wells and Matt Worrall replying.

Llanuwchllyn fought back from a 3-0 deficit to end Mold Alex’s 100% record with an admirable 3-3 draw.

The Alex were in control after goals from Matty Lewis on 15 minutes, Dan Lloyd after 20 and Danny Wynne 49, but the hosts rallied and grabbed a share of the honours courtesy of Sam Evans (2) and Delwyn Jones.

Holywell Town proved they are well and truly finding their feet in the WNL Premier as they swept aside Plas Madoc 4-0, Shaun Tuck grabbing a brace, Jacob Wise and Ben Brierly adding singles.

Rhydymwyn were 3-1 victors at Castell Alun Colts, Matty Hill (2) and Nathan Mendoza putting the visitors three ahead within the first half-hour.
