Welsh National League Premier Division: five-star Brymbo turn over champions

Brymbo turned the form book upside down with a 5-2 beating of champions and Premier Division leaders Queen’s Park at Tanyfron on Saturday.

After a 14-game winning streak with 11 clean sheets, the Park’s unbeaten run dating back to January was finally ended.

Although Brymbo had lost 6-4 at home to Cefn Albion last weekend and been held 0-0 by Holywell Town in midweek, the Steelmen got it right when the title-holders visited The Crick.

The Park started brightly and talisman Barry Torrence found himself through on goal only to be put out of his stride by the back-tracking defender, who made it difficult for the prolific striker to get his shot off.

Brymbo steadied the ship and a quickfire three goals before half time left the visitors stunned.

All three goals were courtesy of poor defending as Park’s high line was broken by some good long balls, Ben Kearney, Jamie Cumming and Billy New all capitalising to put the hosts three-up at the break.

Seven days earlier Brymbo were also three in front against Albion, but ended up getting pegged back and losing the game.

And they must have feared the worst when the champions began the second half on fire, with so many close calls before Matty Williams headed home, then Niall Challoner was fouled in the box and Torrence converted from the spot. 3-2 and game on!

As the game entered the final stages, the Park gambled and pushed more men forward, leaving Brymbo free to counter attack.

And the hosts made the table-toppers pay when Kearney rounded off a fine move with a bullet header finish from a magnificent Cumming cross.

Kearney completed his treble before the end to secure a famous win for Brymbo.

After the game, Park boss Dave Evans said on social media: “Well done to Brymbo on a great win today. Two good footballing sides going head to head in a great advert for football – the difference being Brymbo took their chances.”

Brymbo supremo Tommy Holmes tweeted: “Great game. Both teams trying to play right way, End to end match. Top club Queen’s Park – all the best.”
