Meet the Manager: Andy Colville (FC Mally)

Andy Colville is manager of the all-conquering FC Mally football team of Llandudno Junction, who have won the Sunday League quadruple three times in the past five seasons.

Please tell us a bit about yourself and your football background

Andy Colville, 33 years old, lived in Llandudno Junction all my life.
Played for Llandudno Junction FC from the age of 8 until I was forced to retire at 22 due to breaking my neck in an accident.

How are things shaping up for FC Mally ahead of the 2019-20 season?

Things are looking good this season. We have retained 90% of last year’s quadruple-winning side with a couple of new additions to help us battle for the 4 trophies, as this season the league has three new teams which we have never faced.

You’ve won everything there is to win as a Sunday football manager – what keeps you motivated?

I enjoy Sundays with the lads as I’m unable to play myself so it still keeps me involved with local football.

What has been the club’s biggest achievement so far? You’ve won 3 quadruples (1 with Nathan Watson in charge) – was any of them more special than the other, or did they all mean the same?

Biggest achievement was winning the NWCFA Sunday Challenge Cup for the first time in Bethesda against Bryngwran Bulls in front of 300 spectators. All quadruples have been special because it’s the best feeling winning with your mates.

What are the big differences between Saturday league and Sunday league football?

Well apart from the obvious!!
Biggest difference is we are like a big family as we all pitch in to do things to raise funds to get the kits, equipment, pay the referees and league fees etc. We don’t get grants and don’t have prize money from the NWCFA. At the end of the day we just want to play football and win.

Do you have any ambitions to manage in Saturday league?

Due to work commitments it’s not on the horizon but maybe one day I might manage my home town team.

As a family, the Colvilles have a big football history. Please tell us about it

As a child football was drummed into me and I used to go down to watch my brothers and cousins play for Llandudno Junction FC. My dad and his brother played, my dad also managed and they both won numerous trophies with local football.

Sarah and Claire are both outstanding in their field with Sarah managing Llandudno ladies and Claire is captain. My brothers and one of my cousins still turn out for me on a Sunday and all family have won numerous trophies both in Saturday football and Sunday football.

Do you have a favoured footballing style as a manager which you like your players to follow?

With the players we have in our team they are very much attack, attack, attack, but are able to switch to defending in a heartbeat. I have been known to give the team the hairdryer treatment at half time if they aren’t playing the way I want them to.

Are Mally a good socialising team? What sort of things do you all do together away from football?

We don’t see ourselves as a team, we see ourselves more as a family. We look after each other and we do socialise as we are all mates. We have regular outings, Christmas do’s and we always have a really good end of season drinks.

What are your ambitions as a football manager? Is there anything you’ve not achieved yet that you’d still like to achieve?

To win another quad this season. This year we are hoping to get into a nationwide competition but you will have to watch this space on that.

I would like to make a special mention to Lynne Plumb who is the founder of FC Mally, who helps me week in week out and does a lot behind the scenes, which the lads and myself greatly appreciate.
