Holyhead Hotspur storm to victory in Battle of Holy Island

NWCFA CHALLENGE CUP ROUND 2 REPORT
Holyhead Hotspur 4
Trearddur Bay 0
Four first half goals set up Hotspur for a thumping victory in the Battle of Holy Island on Wednesday night.
Cymru North hosts Hotspur were expected to face a tough test against Tier 3 Ardal North West leaders Trearddur Bay.
However, the tie was over as a contest at half time, the final score meaning Hotspur will be home to Anglesey’s Llangefni Town in the quarter-finals.
Bay failed to score for the first time in 19 matches as Darren Garmey’s side put up a solid defence throughout.
Holyhead also maintained their 100% record against the Beach Boys dating back to 2024-25 when both were in Ardal North West.
Jake Roberts fired the home team in front after just five minutes and Sam Jones added a second on 10, Jamie Jones with the assist.
Jones was the supplier again with 43 on the clock, Connor Owen this time benefiting for his sixth goal in four games and ninth net-finder of the season.
And recent signing Caio Evans made it four on 45 + 2 with his first goal for the club.
REPORT FROM TREARDDUR BAY FC
Trearddur Bay’s NWCFA Cup run came to an end under the lights away at the New Stadium as a clinical first-half performance from Holyhead Hotspur secured a 4–0 victory for the hosts.
Cymru North side Hotspur came out of the blocks firing, taking total control of the tie immediately. Goals from former Bay defender Jake Roberts and Sam Jones inside the opening 10 minutes saw the visitors fall 2–0 behind before they could truly settle into the rhythm of the derby.
They were dealt a further blow before the half-hour mark when they were forced into an early substitution with Ashley Ainsworth picking up a knock and unable to continue.
Hotspur capitalised on their momentum to add a third before half time. Goalkeeper Dan Williams pulled off an excellent initial save to deny a powerful inbound shot. However, the ball looped up into the air, falling perfectly for Hotspur’s Connor Owen to head home into an empty net.
Deep into first-half injury time, Hotspur notched their fourth. Following a goalmouth scramble in the Bay penalty area, Hotspur’s Caio Evans managed to bundle the ball over the line to make it 4–0. There were loud protests that he had used his hand, but the referee waved away the appeals.
To the credit of the Beach Boys, they refused to let their heads drop and produced a much more competitive performance after the restart.
Bay grew into the match significantly in the second half, tightening up defensively and matching their higher-tier opponents across the pitch, creating chances but just couldn’t find the breakthrough. Top scorer Callum Parry had the best chance late on, but put his effort high over the bar.
Ultimately, it wasn’t to be the Beach Boys’ night, and the defeat sees Bay bow out of the cup as their full focus now turns completely back to the league campaign
