NEWFA Challenge Cup quarter-final list now complete after Mold Alex progress
NORTH EAST WALES CHALLENGE CUP – ROUND TWO
Mold Alexandra 3 (Warren 18, 20, Hogan 90+2)
Chirk AAA 1 (Rogers 35)
Fifth-tier Chirk bowed out of the NEWFA Challenge Cup with a spirited performance against Tier 2 high-flyers Mold Alex.
The Cymru North hosts suffered an early blow when their on loan Colwyn Bay striker Max McGoona saw red on 12 minutes
But prolific Cymru North scorer, former Airbus striker Danny Warren, had the home side two-up after just 20 minutes with a brace.
Warren first struck on 18 minutes and soon after scored from a rebound after his penalty was kept out.
Chirk refused to lie down and pulled one back on 35 minutes with an Ed Rogers free kick.
Without leading scorer Tom Freeman, the North East Wales League Division 2 visitors continued to press and will be disappointed not have scored the equaliser after creating some good chances.
Second half saw an even game with The Colliers giving as good as they got and it was in injury time that Alex got the decisive third goal with substitute Luca Hogan firing home.
An encouraging performance from Chirk and they will hope to take this form into this weekend’s home league game against neighbours Cefn Druids.
