Hero stopper Lacey breaks Berriew hearts again in the Bute Energy Women’s Welsh Cup

Pwllheli goalkeeper Sara Lacey was a penalty shootout hero again

BUTE ENERGY WELSH CUP QR2 – OCTOBER 18, 2026

Berriew 2 (Evans 65, Richards 68)
CPD Pwllheli 2 (Moore 29, M Hughes 83)
(Pwllheli won 4-2 on penalties)

For the second season running keeper Sara Lacey broke Berriew hearts with a crucial penalty shootout save which helped her team pull off a Welsh Cup surprise..

Last season, Lacey was in the Llanystumdwy side from Tier 3 which beat Adran North Berriew 8-7 on spot-kicks after a 1-1 draw. Super-stopper Sara kept out the home side’s eighth penalty taken by Bronwyn North to seal a famous win.

Twelve months on to the day, the popular keeper now with Pwllheli was the hero again when she denied Rhiewsiders skipper Ellie Davies to ensure the Tier 3 underdogs triumphed 4-2 on pens following a 2-2 outcome in the game itself.

Pwllheli were seriously tested for the first time this season in a second qualifying round tie where both teams initially struggled to find a rhythm.

The North Wales Coast League side took a 29th minute lead when a Jini Hughes cross was met by Sian Moore, who put away her 16th goal of the season.

Berriew fought back hard and found the net before half time, but the effort was ruled offside.

The second half was played at a high tempo and two goals in three minutes from the hosts turned the tie temporaraily on its head.

Dottie Evans latched onto a ball over the Pwll defence and chipped the keeper for a 65th minute equaliser.

Hannah Richards then made it 2-1 to the Tier 2 side with a great run and finish on 68.

Pwllheli were far from finished and on 83 minutes Magi Hughes made it 2-2 after playing a lovely one-two wtth sub Hayley Rees-Jones.

No further goals, so it came down to pens.

Magi Hughes, 16-year-old Claudia Owen, Lois Thomas and Sioned Jones all scored for Pwllheli, but Evans missed Berriew’s second kick before Davies saw the fourth saved by the heroic Lacey.
