200 goals in a season doesn’t happen that often – Bangor City 1876 just did it, remember this team doing it too?

What a team – the Cefn Albion quadruple (and nearly quintet) winners of 2014-15

When I first noticed CPD Dinas Bangor City 1876 had passed 200 goals in all competitions this season, it made me wonder how common an occurrence is this?

My conclusion was, after almost 40 years in North Wales sport reporting, it is not a regular thing at all.

Especially in today’s North Wales football scene, where many cup competitions have been scrapped or  trimmed and league sizes cut, 200+ goals in a season is fairly rare.

In lifting a treble of Ardal North West title, FAW Amateur Trophy and Ardal Northern League Cup as well as reaching the Welsh Cup semi-finals, Bangor scored 217 goals in 51 matches.

This got me thinking of other prolific goal scoring teams I’ve covered over the years.

One which stands out is the Cefn Albion side of 2014-15.

It was their debut season, they won four competitions, just missed out on a fifth and amassed 237 goals in just 37 matches – not far off an average of seven goals a game!

That was phenomenal, especially for a brand new team, and I still believe that group of players have never received the recognition they deserve.

The tier system in the Welsh pyramid either hadn’t officially started then, or if it had it didn’t get the focus then that it does now. Tier is a buzz word in Welsh football now like never before.

Cefn Albion played in the North East Wales League – Tier 5 at the time.

Its successor – the current North East Wales Football League – was founded in 2020 following the reorganisation of the Welsh pyramid and encompasses Tiers 4, 5 and 6.

The phenomenal Albion

  • In 2014/15, newly-founded Cefn Albion scored more goals in North Wales senior soccer than any other team – a stunning 237 in just 37 matches.
  • They reached double-figures on six separate occasions, their biggest win a 17-1 hammering of Mold Town United.
  • Cefn won the North East Wales League quite comfortably in the end, although they were given a decent run for their money by runners-up Aston Park Rangers.
  • In 22 league outings they rattled up an astonishing 150 goals.
  • Albion were also unstoppable in scooping the Premier Cup, Presidents Cup and Horace Wynne Cup to make it a quadruple
  • They were denied a full house on the final night of the season when they were pipped 2-1 by Aston Park Rangers in the Clwyd Cup Final.
  • Cefn’s only other loss in 37 games was away to Connah’s Quay Tigers in the league.
  • Their top scorer was Nicky Williams with 59 goals, closely followed by Oliver Davies on 53.
