There is a new name on the NWCFA Intermediate Challenge Cup – llongynfarchiadau i CPD Unedig Nefyn.
The Penwaig became the 52nd team to lift the trophy after beating Llandudno Junction 2-0 in the 89th final of the 132-year-old competition at Porthmadog.
On the hallowed turf of Y Traeth, Alan Jones, Steven Jones and Michael Evans’ Nefyn outfit delivered a performance of tactical maturity and individual brilliance to defeat Junction on Saturday evening.
Nefyn dominated the opening half, dictating the tempo and restricting Junction to rare excursions into the Penwaig half.
Just as it looked like the sides would head into the break level, Rhys Williams produced a moment of pure inspiration. Picking the ball up 35 yards from goal, Williams unleashed a speculative strike, giving Nefyn a deserved lead in the dying moments of the half.
The second half started pretty much the same, with Nefyn dictating play and creating the better chances without getting the second goal.
As the game wore on, Llandudno Junction threw caution to the wind, pushing more men forward. The climax arrived in stoppage time when Junction committed every man – including their goalkeeper—forward for a desperate corner.
Nefyn didn’t just survive the pressure; they exploited it. Goalkeeper Alex Ward-Jones showcased elite vision, claiming the cross and immediately launching a clinical counter-attack.
Substitute Llyr S Williams, brought on to provide fresh legs in the closing stages, sprinted clear of the stranded defece and calmly slotted into the empty net to secure the trophy and spark a sea of blue and white celebration.
Concentration now switches to Tuesday night’s crucial league clash againts Bontnewydd and the battle for the North Wales Coast West Premier Divison title.
