A new name is guaranteed on the trophy when the 89th NWCFA Intermediate Cup Final takes place at Y Traeth, Porthmadog, on Saturday.

Llandudno Junction of the North Wales Coast East League Premier Division and North Wales Coast West Premier high-flyers Nefyn United will both appear in their first Intermediate final.

The teams last met in the 2023-24 Intermediate Cup, where Junction defeated the Penwaig 3-1 in a first round tie, Rhys Williams edging United ahead before Jack Williams, Dean Seager and a Matty Jones penalty won it for the Railwaymen.

The Intermediate Cup has a varied history with a couple of lengthy absences from the North Wales football calendar since the 1980s. Now in its fourth comeback season, it is hoped the tournament is back to stay.

First played for in 1894/95, the competition’s first winners were Bangor and the last to lift the cup were Penmaenmawr Phoenix, who did not compete this season due to their promotion to Tier 3 – only Tier 4 sides are presently entered.

Nefyn are enjoying a fine season, having recently gone on a 13-match unbeaten run in the league in which they conceded a miserly two goals. They edged past Mochdre Sports on penalties in the semis.

Key players include top-scorer Tomi Jones Evans, the creative Steffan Toplis and that remarkably consistent defence, with class keeper Alex Ward-Jones between the posts.

Seventh in their league, Junction also won their semi on penalties, knocking out current NWCW Premier leaders Menai Bridge Tigers in what was quite a surprise.

Full of experience and knowhow on how to win games, the Railwaymen’s danger men could include long-time prolific marksman Dave Maddock, the skilful Bryan Roberts and dead-ball specialist Matty Jones.

Having said all that, both squads are packed with players with an ability to influence matches.

It has all the makings of a great final.
