Veteran Roberts’ wonder strike wins game for Blaenau and ends Nefyn’s long unbeaten record – but Penwaig remain class act in title race

At a rain-slicked Cae Clyd on Tuesday night, CPD Unedig Nefyn’s remarkable 15-match unbeaten streak finally snapped.

However, the 1-0 scoreline in favour of 4th-placed Blaenau Ffestiniog Amateurs tells only a fraction of the story. This was a defeat born by a singular moment of magic and a series of agonising “what-ifs.”

Nefyn’s defensive record this season has been nothing short of elite, with only three goals conceded in their last 13 league outings.

It took something truly extraordinary to breach that line. Within the first 90 seconds. Blaenau’s 40-year-old evergreen striker Ceri Wyn Roberts produced the strike of a lifetime—a 25-yarder on the turn that arrowed into the top corner. Roberts, who rejoined the Quarrymen in November after a brief retirement, proved he still retains the old magic.

On this dark wet April evening, it was the perfect storm that left the visitors chasing the game before they had even settled.

What followed the opening goal was far from being the Penwaig’s best performance, but could have gone into the break level with the amount of times Nefyn’s attackers found themselves in Blaenau’s box.

Rather than panicking, the visitors took control of the contest. After a few sharp words by the Nefyn management team at the interval.

The Nefyn side came out really strong and focused. Pinning Blaenau back for majority of the second half. Credit has to go to Nefyn’s squad strength, with their levels strengthening as the substitutes were made.

The chances came in waves. Nefyn exploited the flanks, worked the channels, and forced a string of desperate clearances. On any other Tuesday, two or three of those opportunities would have rippled the net. Instead, they found a Blaenau side inspired by their early lead.

While the loss stings, the context of Nefyn’s season remains overwhelmingly positive. With their focus now on a League Cup Semifinal away to Gwalchmai and an Intermediate Cup Final against Llandudno Junction next to play!
