If Wrexham beat reigning champions Cardiff City at STōK Cae Ras on Sunday and lift the Genero Adran Premier title, it will be the biggest achievement ever for North Wales women’s football – certainly in the national league era.
While Bangor City Girls winning the Welsh Cup three times between 1996-97 and 2001-02 and competing in Europe was a magnificent feat, nothing has occurred since or before involving a North Wales team to rival that accomplishment – until now.
Since a Welsh Premier Women’s League was founded in 2009 – and went fully national in 2012-13 – success for northern clubs had been non-existent before Wrexham entered the newly-named Adran Premier in 2023-24 and went semi-professional.
While the Red Dragons’ first two seasons in the top flight showed promise, including two Welsh Cup Final appearances, it is the current 2025-26 campaign which has seen the north truly challenge southern dominance.
The present season has already been a triumph for Wrexham with them landing their first major honour – the Genero Adran Trophy – beating the mighty Cardiff in the final.
While the Bluebirds gained revenge over Jenny Sugarman’s side in the Welsh Cup semi-finals, Wrexham have now geared themselves into a situation where they can actually be crowned Adran Premier champions this Sunday.
The pride of Gogledd Cymru can become the first North Wales women’s team to be crowned national league champions if they conquer Cardiff and thus end three years of Bluebirds dominance.
Wrexham know they are capable of defeating Iain Darbyshire’s side, having already won at Cardiff City Stadium in the league this season, as well as celebrating that unforgettable Adran Trophy final success.
A draw on Sunday would still leave Sugarman’s dynamos in a strong position – two points ahead of Cardiff with one game apiece left, Wrexham’s final match on April 5 being at home to a Swansea City outfit they demolished 7-1 on their travels in midweek.
Wrexham’s performances in their last two tricky tests have proved beyond doubt they deserve this title. A hard-earned 1-0 result at The New Saints was followed by that sinking of the Swans.
Displays where they proved they can grind out a scrappy one-goal success or dazzle their way to a 7-1 wonder show. These two games alone told us so much about this Wrexham side.
Even on the occasions they have lost to Cardiff this season, Wrexham were by no means outplayed. In a 2-1 away league defeat in January, the visitors fell asleep at the back in the dying seconds and conceded a winner. They could easily have had the game won themselves long before that last-gasp sickener.
As for the Welsh Cup loss, Wrexham had enough chances to wrap the tie up by half time, but went off the boil in the second 45.
The Red Dragons have match-winners everywhere. Skipper Jodie Bartle can be a massive danger at set pieces, midfield magician Faye Knox has a golden gift for producing the vital goal, while in Katie Barker, the STōK Cae Ras side possess the deadliest finisher in the league – already a record-breaker with her all-time league highest in a season 21 goals so far.
Of course Cardiff have plenty of key influencers too. They have been there, done it, worn the winners’ ribbons so many times, but this season they have been seriously challenged.
If the Bluebirds do win the title again they’ll have earned it. However, surely this must be Wrexham’s time. They have lit up the Adran Premier like no-one else this season, new manager Sugarman’s fresh signings making a huge difference.
So much hard work has been done to get themselves into this position.
Wrexham owe it to themselves – and their amazing supporters – to finish the job on Sunday.
What the men’s team at Wrexham has achieved so far under Hollywood ownership and the management of Phil Parkinson has been astounding, but Sunday is about the women’s squad which has come so far in a relatively short space of time.
They are ground-breakers for women’s football in the North, flag-flyers of the present and a blueprint for a bright future.
Come on Wrexham AFC Women, do it for North Wales. No-one deserves it more.
