Nefyn are through to the Intermediate Cup final for the first time in their history after a dramatic penalties victory over Mochdre Sports in Saturday’s semi at Cae’r Delyn.
The Penwaig had one foot in the final during normal time before determined North Wales Coast East Premier visitors Sports equalised in the 92nd minute through sub Finlay Jones to force a shoot-out.
After some hard work by the Nefyn groundstaff the match went ahead and two very physical, well-matched sides went at it hammer and tongs.
Following a very cagey opening 30 minutes with neither keeper being tested, Nefyn started to grow into the game creating some very good chances.
In first half added time, Ifan Jones volleyed home a lovely 25 yard strike from a Steffan Toplis flick on. One-nil at the interval to the hosts was a fair reflection on the game.
In the second half Nefyn were put under a lot of pressure with Mochdre having many set pieces but Alex Ward-Jones in goal was brilliant in dealing with the high balls into the box.
While Mochdre were pushing they left spaces and Ifan Jones had a glorious chance to make it 2-0 but a brilliant save from away keeper Nic Bould kept it at one.
Then Nefyn had the ball in the net on 85 minutes but it was disallowed for offside against Noa Griffith.
In the 90th minute, Mochdre sent on super sub Finlay Jones, and soon after his effort from the edge of the box went in with the aid of a slight deflection.
It was now down to spot-kicks and both keepers made good saves, but Nefyn captain Llyr Pennant Williams stepped up to rifle the decisive penalty as hard as he could down the middle to win the tie.
The winners had every right to feel elated, while the losers could feel unlucky to come off second best in a very even tie.
