Team of the moment CPD Llannefydd have major form in the upsets department

Weekend sensations CPD Llannefydd are no strangers to causing upsets or troubling top teams which had seemed untouchable.

On Saturday, the mid-table Tier 3 Ardal North West side succeeded where four Tier 2 hopefuls had already failed this season – beating CPD Dinas Bangor City 1876.

After 32 league and cup matches without defeat, City were expected to extend their unbeaten record at Llannefydd at the weekend, but a shock was in store.

Producing a performance full of fire and commitment, the villagers pulled off a well-deserved 3-2 victory over the league leaders.

Bangor would already have known they were in for a battle, having been held 2-2 at home by Llannefydd earlier this season.

Llan were one of only two teams to take a point off the Citizens this term – Penmaenmawr Phoenix the other – and the sole side out of 15 visitors to Bangor City Stadium in 2025-26 to avoid defeat.

Fans of 1876 may also remember a previous loss to Llannefydd in 2021-22, a 3-1 reverse in the FAW Trophy.

So there was more of a hint of Llan being something of a bogey side for Bangor.

There’s more….

CPD Y Rhyl 1879, now in the Cymru North, will also recall Llannefydd being an awkward opponent.

In their debut season of 2021-22, the Lilywhites were crowned champions of the North Wales Coast East Premier Division with an unbeaten record of 24 wins and two draws.

The only team they failed to beat? Llannefydd, eventually runners-up who held 1879 2-2 at home and grabbed a 1-1 draw at Belle Vue.

Another memorable upset was caused by the Tier 4 team then managed by Gwyndaf Pritchard in that same 2021-22 campaign when they triumphed 3-1 at third-tier Rhayader Town in the FAW Amateur Trophy. One of their finest-ever results.

Llannefydd are obviously a team which can never be under-estimated. The bigger the challenge, the higher they rise.
