New date night for orienteering event in Conwy

The new Conwy Urban Night orienteering event that was postponed from last week due to the icy conditions has been re-arranged for Thursday 15th January.

This unique challenge will explore the ancient medieval streets of Conwy.

Organisers confirm: “We’re exploring Conwy’s ancient streets for this one. And it’s going retro – pen, paper and clues only! No map run. I’ve got a series of clues – both educational and non-educational for you to gather around town. Think treasure hunt, but the pot of gold is a lamp post!”

Hundreds of athletes braved icy conditions in North Wales

Alex Aldous with the leading pack at Rhos

Report by Don Hale

There was another excellent turnout at the Llandrillo yn Rhos parkrun last Saturday, despite the freezing temperatures and icy conditions underfoot, which caused the postponement of several other local events,
at Conwy and Nant y Pandy amongst many others.

The rather sandy 5k course at Rhos probably helped athletes to keep their feet and once again this particular parkrun attracted a host of visitors from far afield.

Sam Lewis Jones (Parc Bryn Bach RC) was first finisher on his course debut in just 16 minutes and 54 seconds, with the second runner unknown, but in 3rd place was visiting debutant Ian Lowe (Oswestry Olympians) in 18.28.

Eleanor Ashcroft was first female finisher with a new PB 20.20 in 13th place overall, with Elin Jones second in 20.34 and Alex Aldous 3rd in 21.26.

North Wales Road Runners entered nine members at Rhos, with Will Williams 9th overall on his debut, and 2nd VM50 in 19.38, Stuart Culverhouse in 11th place in 20.10.

Steve Gardner marked his debut with a stunning win in his VM60 age cat after finishing 54th overall in 23.02. Another debutant Steve Poupart clocked 25.20 in 106th place.

Master vet Rob Fryer claimed 2nd VM70 in 148th place in 26.56, and fellow master Don Hale ran his 250th parkrun, finishing 162nd and 3rd MV70 in 27.32. Helen Hannam was 268th in 32,06, and John O’Shea 317th in 34.15. There were 428 finishers.

PRESTATYN

Over 200 athletes braved the freezing conditions at the Nova parkrun at Prestatyn with Mathew Baker first male finisher in 17.44, Aaron Dodwell second in 18.02 and James Lucas third on debut in 18.17.

Prestatyn AC’s Lisa Lines was first female in 21.50, with Catherine Tudor Jones second on her debut in 22.32, whilst Eve Manifold claimed 3rd place in 22.52. There were 206 finishers

PENRHYN

Visiting athlete Kieran O’Brien (St Helens Striders) won the Penrhyn Castle Parkrun with an excellent
debut result of 18.24, with debutant Lloyd Cottrell (Parc Bryn Back RC) second in 18.34, with the third runner unknown.

Visitor Stephanie Louise Harrison (Rochdale Harriers) was top female in another good debut time of 21.33, first-timer Annamarie Lascu took second spot in 22.17, with Ellie Evans (Cybi Striders) third in 23.10. There were 205 finishers.

NEWBOROUGH

Sion Edwards was first finisher at the Newborough Forest Parkrun last Saturday on his debut in 17.32, with Griff Roberts second in 19.16 and Armon Williams third in 19.41.

First female was Cerys Jones in 25.05, Siwan Jones a close runner up in 25.07, with Anne Mildon third in a new PB 25.33. There were 161 finishers.
