Report: Mr Treflyn Jones
Nineteen-year-old forward Osian Evans made it three goals in two games since his return from injury with a double in Saturday’s derby watched by a substantial crowd of 821 at Y Traeth.
Evans, who signed for Port on loan from Caernarfon Town back in July but who has spent several months on the sidelines, struck twice in the first half to ensure Chris Jones’ side are just a point behind leaders CPD Dinas Bangor City 1876 having played a game more.
As a spectacle, the match as a whole failed to live up to expectations. Ultimately, however, a very well taken brace of goals by the combative and talented Evans separated the two sides and gave the hosts a deserved win on the balance of play.
The home side got their noses in front on 12 minutes when free kick from near halfway by Ryan Williams was well headed down by the leaping Cai Jones. His header found Evans in space and the young centre-forward made no mistake as he side-footed home past the diving Morgan Jones in the Pwllheli goal to the delight of a packed Quarry End.
It was then Pwllheli`s turn to threaten when a mis-placed header by Jake Jones gave former Port player Hari Lambe a presentable opportunity but he volleyed wide of the target. Another good chance was missed by the visitors shortly after.
Port`s play for much of the half appeared uncharacteristically disjointed at times although credit must go to Pwllheli for their disciplined defending.
On 42 minutes, Port’s Rhys Alun beat his marker and tried to place his shot past custodian Jones who did well to parry the ball tantalizingly onto the post. A Port player got to the rebound but his goal attempt from barely a yard was blocked on the line.
With the clock well into injury time, Port doubled their money when Rhys Alun again taunted the Pwllheli defence before giving a timely lay-off to Evans, who let fly from just outside the box and curled the ball past a motionless Morgan Jones into the net. An absolute peach of a goal and a timely one at that!
During the second period, Port fashioned the majority of goal-scoring opportunities. A deft flick by Rhys Alun put Evans clean through, but his firm shot cannoned off the keeper`s legs.
Seconds later, Rhys Alun forced the keeper into a diving save to his left. Substitute Danny Brookwell engineered several promising moments with his mazy runs and two long distance shots from the Anglesey man were safely gathered by Jones.
With five minutes of the 90 remaining, Evans missed out on a hat-trick when he miscued in front of an open goal after great play by Brookwell.
